that puts them way out into the room (in a long room)
Follow Ups:
chair positioned approx 1/5th the distance from the back wall; example if the room is 20' length, chair would be approx 4' from back wall (wall behind you).
Of course this isn't cut in stone, YMMV
My 3.7s never quite made it there, but I got very close (approximate Limage arrangement was the final maneuver) - about a foot shy in a greater than 30' long room. I'm not sure which impressed me more, the tonal balance or the imaging. Now, I have my hot-rodded MMGs in that room, but in the 'bedroom' half (which includes the half bath, but only recently was invaded by the bed). They face the back wall and are nearly two-thirds of the way into the room. That also lands them beyond the 15' mark, which is where the reflected sound will be delayed by 30ms and we'll cease hearing combing effects. I rather like sleeping with Maggie ;-).

or maybe smoother upper bass is a more accurate description
Which way?
I was already happy with my setup when I finally got around to pushing my 3.7s closer to the side walls and abandoning Magnepan's recommendations regarding toe angle. To say that the result surprised me would be an understatement. It was in that orientation that the bass/midbass/midrange (balance/smoothness) impressed me most...that is, until other factors forced me to change speakers. Now, all I really miss are those glorious ribbon tweeters.
My daughter has fallen under the spell of the ribbons - really likes the 3.7s, but she says that she preferred the bass when she had my hotrodded MMG/REL hybrids in the girlcave.
