To my way of thinking, there is at least 1 big advantage of T-IVas over 20.Xs - the ribbon sits in a separate frame. This means when the bass is really pumping ... vibrations produced in the bass frame to not shake the ribbon cages.
There may be a second - as the mylar drivers on a 20.X are hidden behind the pole pieces, we don't know whether this is also true for the 20.X ... but T-IVas have the mid on a completely separate sheet of mylar from the bass panel ... so no IMD.
Yes, you've paid $2,200 to have your T-IVas rebuilt but, given the price for 20.7s, you can do a helluva lot to improve them (like Neo8s for the mids & bi-amping) and still spend a lot less than what 20.7s cost. And with Neo8s and bi-amping, I suspect you would end up with a better speaker! :-))
Re. bi-amping ... you don't just "bi-amp with a SET". In addition to a SET for the mids & ribbons (which would have to be a pretty powerful SET!), you would need:
1. a powerful ss amp for the bass panels - something like a 1KW W4S.
2. an active XO to replace the outboard passive bass/mid XO. If you get a DSP unit like, say, miniDSP or DEQX, you can get room correction too, in addition to bass LP and mid HP filters.
Good luck,
Andy
Follow Ups:
I already have a krell ksa-250 and a krell 402e in addition to se-811 so I think I'm ok with amps. I was told by another tympani owner that the marchand xm-26 crossover was the way to go, and bi-amping and stands will really improve the midrange. I did listen to the 20.7's today.
I've used a comparable analogue 3-way active XO for the last 15 years but am moving across to a digital active XO because of a change I am making to my system (adding some subs). The advantage of a DSP unit is that you get room correction as well as the XO filters ... analogue XOs only give you the filters.
Regards,
Andy
