Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
129.72.183.198
Greetings;
I am curious about the Magnepan Tympani 1A currently listed for sale on Audiogon http://app.audiogon.com/listings?utf8=%E2%9C%93&global_search_text=tympani
These two speakers have non-consecutive serial numbers, is this normal, or does it imply these were not originally sold as a stereo pair? Approximate cost to rebuild/resock at Magnepan would be around $2000.00 (plus shipping), is this correct? I also understand that shipping by freight company on a pallet would be preferable. Any other factors I should consider before making an offer?
Thanks for any information...

It would be interesting if these are indeed the original segmented driver Tympani to have them rebuilt with modern diaphragm materials and foil conductors. I would ask magnepan about that kind of restoration before considering an offer. Segmented drivers have some benefits as pointed out by Doug Schroeder in his reviews of the Kingsound ESL models.
What is this segmented driver? I thought all Tympanis used the normal Magneplanar type of driver. Are there any pictures of the segmented drivers?
The first Tympani had the drivers separated into individual diaphragm segments but I don't remember how many.
.
IMO even if they were free, having been so far out passed by any and all their revisions, they aren't worth the cost of doing anything at all with them.
They seems to be in an awful condition... Strange about the serial numbers, check with Mangepan. Rebuild is expensive and will not cure the vague imaging. Maximum $300, 1199 is a joke.
It's an insult. I couldn't think of a garbage dump that would take them off my hands. Come to think about as I'm writing, perhaps the seller relieved a dumpster of them.
