Any opinions/suggestions on the suitability of using a First Watt F1 amp to drive the SMGa?
Listening is mostly classical in a mid-size room that doubles as library and office.

Maybe you could elaborate on why you want to use the F1 amp? That amplifier has very high output impedance and is targeted to a speaker system with a very level load impedance.....which is exactly what the SMGa is. However, the efficiency is really low and you only have about 7 watts available from that power amp. The SMGa is rated at 90db sensitivity with 2 watts input so, theoretically, you'd only be able to achieve about 96db SPL levels at 1 meter. That wouldn't be enough for most users, but if your listening requirements are very modest then maybe it would work for you.

If you want to use low power amps the only planar to go with is a line array of Neo8 or Neo8pdr with a powered subwoofer for each channel. The line array of 8 drivers per side will give you a 96 db sensitivity and be flat up to 12khz and drop off gradually with the Neo8 or 94-95 db sensitivity and extension to 17khz with a Neo8PDR.
The bottom can be crossed over as low as 200 hz.
You can add a ribbon supertweeter if you find it lacks the last bit of top octave air
People who drive maggies with low power amps use amps with 25 watts or more and are still limited in volume as they have to keep the amp from clipping.
10 watts is not enough power for those speakers

Many thanks to all. Now I know.
This exercise is one of the main reasons I read and support Audio Asylum...
