Ken:
One of my 989 shows a symptom similar to Per's, a ~10dB loss of sensitivity, though I don't remember hearing distortion. I never play at high level, so protection never comes on. This drop in sensitivity appeared over night, nothing that grew over time. This loss also disappears (so far) once the speaker have been left on for a couple of hours (more than 2). Since the loss of sensitivity was across all elements, I was suspecting something in the PS. Any idea of what the problem could be? Sniffing gone bad? Something else?
Follow Ups:
Based on your description I would expect excess leakage in one or more panels of the offending speaker. A fault in the power supply would drop the output but it would not return to normal level. A panel leaking too much will load down the supply and reduce output. Once the leakage stops everything returns to normal.
Thanks Ken. So how do I identify the faulty panel so I can get it repaired? I am also not sure the problem persisted, maybe it was some dust that eventually got fried creating this leakage, I need to wait to repeat the problem.
Remove the top cap, remove the grille cloth from the velcro strips and pull to the base of the speaker. Get the room very dark. Excess leakage will look like micro sparks or other weird light effects inside the panel.
