Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
129.6.106.38
I was (a long time ago) a SMGa owner. I am interested in hearing opinions from folks that have experience with Maggies and the current Ohm line of speakers. How does the presentation compare?
Thanks

I owned the OHM F's in the early 1980's but lived in a losft with no space consgtraint ...About 6 years ago I went down to BKLYN to hear them where they are manufactured....I think they are considerably better than when I owned the, having added a tweeter and materials that make them more efficient and smoother. I own the 1.7's Maggies. I came close to buying a pair right before the later came out. I preferred several OHM model to an unmodified 1.6's...I prefer the 1.7's to comparative models that were designed to occupy the same room space. Price wise at the time with the OHM sale it would have not been the determining factor...At the time I n longer owned the amps that would work with the OHMS and that would have added a considerable cost. In the end I need high current amps for the Maggies but it was trade off I was not aware of. Their omni sound is wonderful. Planers too, create a wide sound stage but are more particular in placement. There are several European speakers that have borrowed their technology selling a huge prices.I like them both.: they do different things but each does them well(Ohm has a very robust bass and a great spatial presence). For a NYC apt the Maggies have worked well for me.(More detailed for the music that I listen to.) Good luck
Very interesting. So you'd say the Ohm sound was comparable in quality (although a totally different design and type) with Magnepans?
I have always been really curious about Ohms.

As someone who recently bought an NOS sort of pair of MMG but has had 2 pairs of Ohm Walsh (a pair of 2's and a pair of 3's)for longer I will say this. The Ohm sound has similar things to maggie sound, meaning weaker base but good uppers. However the one thing about the Ohms is they are omnipresent in that there is no real sweet spot in the room as you can detect the stereo or omni effect anywhere in the room if the room accoustics are up to it.
Both offer enormous proportion and depth of instrument and voice placement.. (That is not generally said of the Magnepans below the 20.7.) But they do. OhM is know for that...I just find the Maggies are more detailed. The OHM does not a box speaker at all. OHM are designed for specific rooms . Magnepans can play in any size room. . Magnepan room placement is critical -less so with OHMs...Both work best with good class AB amps with plenty of power. OHMs will swallow up most tube amps ' I think in their price range both have little competition. (not a fan of the hybrid ML in the same price range.) You will enjoy either..But audition carefully. Do not buy used OHMS.
May I ask why the caution on used Ohms?
Their new line (designed 4- 5 years ago specifically speaks of a problem of adhesives being corrected. You are probably safe with speakers produced in the last five years. The one hassle is that the large models are heavy as hell, and difficult to ship back and forth. I wish to add one caveat. They are not as clear as maggies but they do some things that maggies do not quite do because of their ability to go lower-they do offer a weight and fullness. Again I love my Magneplaners. If I had the space I would own the Ohms again.
