THE Gunn'ed 3.6Rs (?)

There's an ad on US Audio Mart for a pair of Gunn'ed 3.6R which I believe (someone please correct me if in error) are the (in)famous Varkdriver set. Some here may remember the whole kerfuffle over THAT. No affiliation at all, just an interesting PA historical artifact.

They don't appear to be the same speakers. The ones for sale have more consistent wood grain.

  No, I am pretty sure these are the same. In particular, the seller mentions that the top of one of the boxes is slightly warped and Varkdriver noted in one of his posts that there was a warped top. I am also sure that PG did not make a 2nd pair of cherry and maple stands for the 3.6. In fact, his venture into the 3's was somewhat of a flop and he no longer will even consider doing stands for the 2's, 3's or 20's. He is confining his work to 1.6's, MMG's and the other smaller models.

    Look at the styles, they are different.
    The ones for sale are made from 2 vertical pieces/side edge(2 different woods ripped and glued together).
    The funky ones are only made with 1 vertical piece/side edge (1 board with splotchy grain pattern).
    Correction: The funky ones are also made with 2 ripped/joined pieces/side.

      it means that John made another set in the same style...after all the controversy over the Varkdriver pair. Hmmmm. Cherry DOES darken over time, maybe this explains the difference in looks? Or different lighting?

        I think you maybe correct. I found another image of the old ones. It was made of 2 ripped/joined pieces. The colors of the figured wood must have changed over time.

        is that (IIRC from the old thread) he didn't use a true three-way crossover- it was more of a two-way, w/o a midrange band. Like a 2.5R/2.6R,

        This is the crossover utilized in the Magnestand 3.6. It's a series conversion but with the tweeter driven via a standard parallel network.

        Yep. Which is quite a departure from the stock 3.6 crossover which uses a fairly steep electrical filter on the midrange top end.
        The ribbon tweeter in this configuration is not embraced for its advantages but viewed more as an augmentation super-tweeter.
        You'd have to ask PG's crossover design guy what he was thinking, but since they approached everything from the series configuration paradigm a "hybrid" setup like this emerged.
        Interesting horizontal polar response in the upper end I would imagine.
