I know the late AS used this on his 20.1's and 20.7's...
thanks

I found it very necessary. I do not have a bright room....I have auditioned tube amplifiers with Maggies. Unless I was willing to spend 4x the price of the speakers on tube amps (they did not deliver a crisp bass sound in the lower price categories)...(Not fair to mention brands) Impedance problems (tube preamp) into 47K precludes many excellent tube preamps without internal adjustments. I am using a Vintage Crown Sl2 preamp, which does provide space depth and bass clarity but is a bit raw. I found the change in adding an $8 chokes dramatic and pleasurable. I am using the Emotiva XPA1's mono amps which I think are fairly neutral so they reacted positively to the choke rather than the 1 ohm resistor.
Hi Utley,
Could you explain the 47 k impedance issue to someone like myself who is electronically challenged? When is this an issue in preamps? Is it a preamp to amp issue or a preamp to speaker issue? Or something else all together?
Just trying to learn. Oh, and I also have that same amp, oddly enough.
Here is the deal as explained by JSM and others on the board. (JSM Had Sanders put in 100 ohm modification to match his excellent CJ preamp)
Satie and Dave will jump in and correct me I hope. A non electronic explanation: If the input impedances are significantly in variance(Most tube preamps have 100 ohms you will have a loss of dynamic range , especially at the bottom end. Most solid state amps are designed between 20 and 47 ohms. (Go to impedance matching on Google or on this site) Amp and preamp will play but not at their dynamic range which is extensive on modern equipment. There will also be a loss in potential volume...I know I muffed this but maybe it is a bit helpful. The folks at Emotiva technicians told me something similar. That I best modify the mono block if I wanted to use the CJ 05 preamp. I am sure the guys will come aboard and help you better than I.
Thanks Utley. Very informative. I have two preamps, one of each.
