I would save up to get a later 5800 series adcom or a 565. I personally can't tolerate the top end of the 555, tube pre or not. It sounds like pro audio to me.
Look to the B&K line of amps from 20+ years ago the 4420 in its various incarnations (EX, M etc.), or an original (not "new classic") Parasound 2200 or 3xxx. Haffler 9500/9505 or a pair of 9300/9303 bridged. Or a XL600
Follow Ups:
I went to the B&K Reference 4420 from a GFA-555. It was an enormous improvement with my MG12s. I haven't felt the need to upgrade for years.
It is a little noisy. Not through the speakers, but from the amp itself. It's not bad enough to be bothersome.
My Maggies were SMGs, so the wire tweeters were probably a whole lot more forgiving than the ribbons in play here.
Must admit, when I moved to a Parasound HCA-2200ii, things did improve in every respect.
Parasound HCA-1500A and 1200, also John Curl designs.
Opus 33 1/3
