Hey kids,
As of now I'm running my MGIIIAs through my Carver TFM-25. Plenty of power, that's not the problem. The Carver is designed to sound "like" a tube amp by enhancing the lows and rolling off the highs a bit. I want another sound. I have a line on an Adcom GFA-555 right now. Will this, along with my Magi tube pre, give me a bit more "air" or cleaner sound?
What amp in the same price range ($300-$400) would you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

In that price range you might as well try the Crown XLS Drivecore class D amp. Buy from a place like Guitar Center or Amazon, that has a 30 day return policy. It is supposed to take a few hundred hours of break in to sound best.Just make sure you get the 1500 or above model, as the 1000 unit has lesser specs (more noise).
I tried one on my KEF monitors, and was surprised how well it sounded, compared to the other budget pro amps I have in the house (Mackie and Yamaha). But didn't keep it long enough to be properly broken in, as I needed the funds for a higher priority upgrade.

I would save up to get a later 5800 series adcom or a 565. I personally can't tolerate the top end of the 555, tube pre or not. It sounds like pro audio to me.
Look to the B&K line of amps from 20+ years ago the 4420 in its various incarnations (EX, M etc.), or an original (not "new classic") Parasound 2200 or 3xxx. Haffler 9500/9505 or a pair of 9300/9303 bridged. Or a XL600
I went to the B&K Reference 4420 from a GFA-555. It was an enormous improvement with my MG12s. I haven't felt the need to upgrade for years.
It is a little noisy. Not through the speakers, but from the amp itself. It's not bad enough to be bothersome.
My Maggies were SMGs, so the wire tweeters were probably a whole lot more forgiving than the ribbons in play here.
Must admit, when I moved to a Parasound HCA-2200ii, things did improve in every respect.
Parasound HCA-1500A and 1200, also John Curl designs.
