See my signature quote from Harry -
"You can’t know what the “best” is unless you have heard everything, and keep in mind that given individual tastes, there really isn’t any such thing." HP
Follow Ups:
The original 20.1 five stars and a glowing review
and they sounded exceptional driven by Joule Electra Rite-of-Passage amps.
They were definitely on my short list. As for me, however, no Maggie has the coherency nor low level resolution of a full range electrostat - albeit at a higher cost.
But did he ever proclaim any one to be "the best"?
And then, consider how many different favored "reference systems" he had in rotation.

strangely HP didnt like the 3's but gave four stars to the 2.6(with the ribbon). He did like the first 20.1 ,a lot though. He also liked the tympanis and used their.woofer panels with.the infinity QRS mids and highs, IIRC
Opus 33 1/3
Stu I was always curious to hear that set up. A few years ago our local audio club had a demo by a member who copied that system. But I was out of town and missed it. :^(
However I recall HP raving about a "modest" system he put together with MG 3.X, the Sunfire subwoofer, and a c-j SS amp. So he must have liked at least one model of the 3 series.

Well there's been a pair for sale for sometime on eBay or if you live near Clarksville, TN. Perhaps you could drive by and have a listen!
I have the issue of TAS where HP thought very highly of the 3.6's "combined" with 2 Sunfire Signature Subs. Compared it to the Pipedream whatevers. Been a long while since I read it but I don't remember anything negative he said about them.
He also gave a very positive review of the 3.7's

It was the 3.3 and 3.5 that had deep dips in the freq response. It is still beyond me what Magnepan were trying to do.
I also remember HP's Tympani + CLS combo that followed. That and the Tympani QRS led me to get a Tympani IV and then to mod it with better mids as that was always HPs pet peeve with them. Well, that and the fact that no amp that could power the bass panels could sound good driving the rest of the speaker.
