Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
174.44.145.101
Hi again, Well I called Magnepan today and spoke to Wendell Diller. He told me there haven`t been any changes to the MMG xover at all. He also assured me they only sell new speakers and never used. I tried my best to not offend him on the subject but I could tell he was. Sorry sir. He didn`t know the component values of the xover only the engineering dept. would. I asked if I could speak to one of them and he said they work on the factory floor and very busy on a new design. I think within a week I`ll have it open and see what`s what. So I have the second order xover?

Well I know mine were new when I got them because they sounded awful when I first played them. Was tempted to just pack them back up and return them. Instead I let them play for an afternoon while I did some errands. That made them listenable and they've continued to improve over the last few months. When I upgrade to .7s when they come out I think I'll let my dealer run them in for a weekend before taking them home.

I don't think there's much point in trying to get concise answers from Wendell on any topic. :)
He's clearly not correct with regard to the "used" MMG question. A poster noted below that he bought a set used from the factory, and I bought my second set of MMG's that way as well a couple of years ago.....so I know of what I speak. That's why I mentioned it in the thread below. :)
No, I don't think you have a second-order crossover. It's most likely a first-order design and the second capacitor is shunted with the other to create a non-standard value. If it really is a second-order design then Wendell is wrong again claiming no changes to the MMG xover.
Oh well.
Dave.
I mean c'mon a 30 day trial and at the end of the trial you send them back to Magnepan (in pristine condition) and they do exactly what with em'? Lol....Ole Wendell

When you bought your 2nd pair of MMG's did you know they were "used" or were you told they were new? If they were "new" how did you figure out they were in fact used?
At least Wendell is consistent :). I wonder what the new design is.

just his way of saying 'nunyun'.I can see where a person (or group of persons) who devote their entire lives creating a product, obtaining patents, fighting in courts over the years, failed marriages (not saying in this case) may NOT be so forthcoming in giving out technical data/information over the phone to a complete stranger.
Some companies have no problem giving out that kind of info, some -and I suspect 'most' would rather not. Nothing personal I'm sure.
I have no affiliation with any audio company...Just my take.

I just asked he about a product I purchased that his company developed. A question about its workings not trying to steal their patent.Nothing I can`t readily find out with a removal of the sock .
Indirectly (at least) you appear to have asked Mr. Diller to 'spill the beans'. If I were in his place, and with some beans to spill, I'd behave as he did. Moreover, it seems to me that was the only ethical thing for him to do.
As long as you are game to open your speakers, you might want to consider buying an inexpensive LCR meter (I bought a DM4070 from ebay for ~$30) so you can measure the capacitance and inductance of the components. They are not always marked, especially the inductor. The meter will come in handy when you rebuild the crossover as matching left and right components will be advantageous.
Thanks, I do have a capacitance and inductace meter. I did sneak another peak behind fuse panel and see an Erse 12 uf 250 volt film cap.
I suspect most (again not all) designers play their cards close to their chest; the nature of the beast so to speak -even though we'll all eventually see their hand at the end of the game,Sort of like asking a chef to come out of the back and asking how much paprika is used (ok I admit a bad analogy), or asking a person how much money they earn (even if the information is public knowledge).
Again, don't take it personal, there is really nothing to debate IMO.
