Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
64.121.235.173
Hello everyone;
I thought this might be useful to some, here at the Planar. About 2 months ago, my 29+ year old Bryston point 5 pre-amp went south. I saw a review over at the Amp/PreAmp Asylum about this Schiit passive pre-amp. For $49.00, I figured, what the hell. I could use it until I find a used pre-amp within my budget. I now have this little Schiit in my system for 2 months and I'm no longer looking for a pre-amp. Of course, YMMV, as you know.
I have no affiliation with this company...Just a happy customer.
Take care...old guy

The guys at Schiit got it together. I have read nothing but good about the Bifrost DAC and I am really enjoying my Loki DSD unit. They don't claim miracles but they give you a really big bang for the buck.
Amen, Neo! I had a Loki for a short while here on loan several weeks ago. If I solve an issue (brought by the planned adoption of full-time passive preamp) I'll buy one. I am even looking into doing a tweak or two on it already, LOL! (nothing fancy...caps tend to be low-hanging fruit).
The SYS passive preamp has turned out to be yet another surprise. OG42 kept bugging me about how good and cheap it is. Since I have a friend's passive preamp here while they fix his power amp, I knew I would have to return it soon. So, I ordered the SYS, fully expecting to be underwhelmed.
It arrived this past weekend...and it has been overwhelmingly great for the price. For less than 1/10 the price of the other one I have here, it has virtually matched the SQ in almost all directions. I take my hat off to them. The ALPS pot may not last as long as the individual resistors in a stepped attenuator. Yet, it sure has advanced tremendously in clarity and ability to retain full imaging attributes. The SYS' two inputs are too few for my needs but I plan to keep it in the loop while I save for an upgrade later. (It actually is slightly better than the other one for...the other thing : - )) Anyway, I really like Schiit's tendency to understate the potential of their gear...and even mock themselves.
This unit is an affordable way for many to tests the waters of a cleaner signal path to their power amps, and be delighted by the extra SQ that will often result.
Blasphemy I SAY!! No way it could be any good for that price. Impossible!!
Now that that's out of the way =)
Had I not experimented with a DIY passive pre in the past, I would find it hard to believe a word you typed. For the small sum I spent in parts on that thing, it was spooky how good that thing sounded. I could see the Schiit SYS being right at home in a small of minimalist system.
Happy Listening!
LOL! Rickey, that's like what friends used to tell me when I spoke about the virtues of passive preamps in some systems. For all their simplicity -- usually a bunch of top-quality resistors -- many such units cost several hundred bucks, some into the thousands. A few friends eventually agreed to spend the money and try one. All these friends fell in love with their systems all over again.
Like your DIY explorations showed, a decent pot can also do the trick. As a matter of fact, the SYS is basically just that, an ALPS quality pot plus a selector switch for 2 inputs.
Given its price, I was not prepared to see it pretty much match the performance of another -- 10x in price -- passive pre that I have here at the moment. The SYS is really good news. For $50 bucks plus decent (not expensive) interconnects, many can obtain a mighty SQ improvement that is very real.
