A month or so ago, I posted that I was going to try this. No one commented. Perhaps you all thought it too crazyWELL, my crazy idea works awesome
In 6+ years of owning the 3.5Rs, I was never able to create a proper spl in my big room and kept blowing ribbons, I finally threw in the towel and bought a used pair of Swan Diva’s for a song (npi). They are ported, a bit tubby and wooly in the bass. I plugged the ports and ran my SVS 12” powered sub to good effect, but...
the 12” woofer is not fast, and hard to adjust to prevent smearing well into the mids
I was going to sell the Maggies and the W4S 4 channel amp I used to drive them, when I remembered...
About a year ago, Magnepan came out with woofer panels @ $750, which don’t dig deep but provide more bass due to moving more air in the room

One night I had a brain fart and decided to use the Maggie bass panels only with the OEM XO + the Swans out front
They work much better together than they have a right to, considering no special XO is being used
I am biwiring off my Parasound A 23
See my AA ad if interested in the W4S MC 250/500
Best sound I have had

I too heard the Tympanis, decades ago at Steven Zipsers' condo
They should still make them, or a version of them
Also, part of the idea came from Paul McGowan's room when he was using big Maggie bass panels
I did have to run the Swans out of phase with the maggies when using my Parasound A23, but not with the W4S
The result is seamless
Well, your crazy idea has given me a crazy idea. If you had a pair of full size Maggies and acquired another pair of similar size and crossed them over low, would it work like a pair DWM's. I bet there are many Maggies being sold at low prices because of "needing tweeter repair".
Once upon a time Maggie had Tympanis which were 3 separate panels per side in 2 different planes behind the main panels. I heard them back in the 80s, which may have had an impression on me

No doubt :)
Awesome looking panels; man, sorry they didn't work out for you prior to this but at the same time happy you found a use for the bass end.
I dig the room lenses too; wish I could get my hands on a used set.
You're a DIY guy, aren't you, GL?
A guy called Jon Risch who is the guru of Cable Asylum posted (on his site - which is now defunct) instructions on how to DIY them ... out of plastic plumbing piping.
If you can contact Jon through AA, I'm sure he would send you those instructions.
Mine produced a significant increase in soundstage depth when I put them just off the front wall, in line with the reflection-path from the ribbons to the front wall, to my ears (my ribbons, then, were on the inside).
Regards,
Andy
I gave those a whirl back in '03 ; the pics long since lost. Admittedly I didn't quite understand the science behind them other than the diffusion aspect.Don't really have the time any more it seems.
