there is pair on eBay at the moment- seller's description-
"This auction is for a pair of Quad 57 ESL electrostatic speakers. Both speakers work but are very quiet in use ad seem to lack something. We suspect this has something to do with the mains side of things as it sounds the same if unplugged from the mains as when they are hooked up to the mains"
In my (limited) experience this probably means the panels are stuffed too, but I would be interested in any opinons
Follow Ups:
yes, the panels could be bad, but more than likely this is a HV power supply issue (EHT boards probably). If the high voltage ain't up to snuff, then output will be really low, but still working. Of course it could be the panels are bad, loading the supply too much, etc.
'Hard to know unless you have a HV probe to check power supply both connected and then disconnected from the panels. otherwise you could be just throwing money at it.
And be cautious when poking around HV supplies. If not familiar with electricity or electronics, this is not a good place to start.
"as it sounds the same if unplugged from the mains as when they are hooked up to the mains"
Obviously something is wrong.
If you try to play them unplugged, you will get sound, but it ain't the same.
(At least on ESL 63's) And, I might note that the owner's manual states pretty clearly that playing the speakers unplugged is a really bad idea.)
