considering a new set of Krell mono will run you in the $60K range (and yes, yes I know there are probably more worthy amps on the market). Although the claim is they can easily be ran off 100wpc tube ampsMy only concern (assuming I've already won the lotto)is dealing with a pair of 1/2 ton speakers (upstairs placement is definitely out of the question!).
Built in '91 you gotta wonder if this planar raised the bar so high other planar builders felt threatened 'trickle down' models would take over the home market.
Not sure when Mr Winey took Apogee to court, but this one had to be the 'back breaker' (and at 1300 lbs; more ways than one lol..)
What a beauty though; wow-

I'm guessing a BRACE of the 100watt 'A' monos from Pass would turn the trick.
The 'budget' solution? That's a good question to ask someone who just dropped 6 digits on a pair of speakers.
Too much is never enough
Krell on this speaker = disaster...I know I have heard this system with all Krell reference monoblocks...before the owner switched to much better sounding NAT tubes.
You're right - they are beauties. I've really never heard a pair of Apogees. I did get an opportunity to audition a pair of Scintillas once, but they caused the amp to barf about a minute in to it. The amp was Nakamichi's (not exactly authorized, as I understand it) 'copy' of Nelson's Stasis amp. It didn't matter. At the time, I couldn't afford them anyway.
You're also right about placing a pair of speakers that heavy upstairs, which is where my listening room is. Heck, just getting them upstairs would be problematic enough.
