Thanks for the great responses everyone! just getting back to this now. After my initial post I left to head up to the mountains to do some kayaking and where I was at had no cell coverage let alone internet.
Rickey, I have the stands. I just didn't attach them yet as it is easier to do all the moving around, cleaning of them, keeping them out of the way for now etc. Plus, the stands are just a little beat up so I thought I might re paint them before I attach them anyway.
I also have a Denon AVR3300 that list more amperage than the others so maybe I can use that until I get things a little more figured out with the Maggies. Plus, a buddy has a NAD 2400PE THX amp he has listed on local CList for $175 I could look at. They won't work long term though as my Janis sub requires a pre amp out and in as a connection.
I am looking forward to figuring this all out and getting these girls back up and in use as they deserve. It amazes me the thing that people just store away in their garage. Find to find though I guess.
Follow Ups:
Though I myself like, recommend and even use some Denon AVR receivers with some Maggies, the AVR-3300 in NOT one of them. It dates from a manufacturing design that used flimsy power supplies. Low impedance may burn the unit if its protection system fails.OTOH, a NAD 2400PE is a little beast, if a bit aged. I have the even older 2200PE. The power is there (quite a bit despite its power rating) but the old parts cannot do as refined a job as they may have in the past. Still, if I dusted and ran my 2200PE for a few days of break-in, it would fool folks...punchy bastard that it is.
Still, at this stage you should not have to force a purchase if you can borrow a half-decent amp to test the Maggies. This way you can find out what the next needed expense should be. This may be "fix Maggies" or, happily "feed them more/better power" with a good power amp.

Thanks JBen. I am definitely in no hurry with the amp, other than using something for now that gives me some indication of what condition these are in and not a false reading. Although, with my Emotiva E-Club membership I do get 20% all orders until the end of the month. I wonder if one of their 2 channel amps would be a good initial option. I have their XDA-2 DAC which is also a preamp and could connect an amp to that until I get my integrated back from the repair shop? I also have a Russound 90 watt 2 channel I am not using that I could do the same thing with I guess. ?
Nothing wrong with the XPA1i's.. I used their previous models to drive the 1.7's...But Satie's advice is excellent If you can bi-amp do it... I do not know how to get the crossover's my speakers but you will get a more relaxed sound if you follow his advice.
Well I attached the stands and hooked them up to my old Pioneer SX737 for a quick listen. The good thing is they work! The bad may be, and I am not sure because I don't know what I am talking about yet, but they sound muffled or baffled is the best way I can describe it. Maybe one you know what that might translate to.
Time for some research I guess. Plus, remove the sock and see what lies under.
There are a few things that could cause the initial deficient sound. At least you are getting some sounds. (Is it the same character from each Maggie?( Try swapping the channels out of the Pioneer, just in case.)
I do agree with you...take them socks off and let's have a look. There are a few reasons for this, which includes checking out a long-stored pair of Mylar sheets and associated trace wires.
One other reason is that you might as well get familiar with the innards of the Maggies because...
...the darn bi-amping crowd here is already beginning to preach their rotten gospel!
...LOL, a gospel which I also spread, to which I've adhered even before I got my MMGs, and which makes them sound like a million.
But first, let's check out and fix the basics...THEN we have enough in store for you to start the real fun!
Agreed JBen. Probably time to peek inside.
Each speaker sounds the same, which is why I question source power issues. Or, bad caps? Odd otherwise.
Once I get my integrated amp back, I will be also using my Janis sub. It pulls out the low frequencies so I should be good until I want to step up to biamping or whatever increased power option I can justify.
