I am thinking about trying this (and I know someone who can do the electronics) for my study, and partnering it with Kef bass units I have. Anyone is welcome to offer an opinion...

oops, should have mentioned I am going to try it with the treble from esl63's- one panel a side
correction, "diffuser"
... ever since I learnt that modern Quad ESL treble/tweeter panels ( for the lack of a better term ) were dimensionally identical to the ESL-63, these HVAC diffusers that are commonplace in restaurant in-ceiling sound systems to enforce dispersion are my first impulse.
Prior to that knowledge, I heard that Quad improved dispersion which would translate to a less wide panel innermost. However, that was misinformation. They improved treble panel efficiency instead. That was their way of boosting eccentric S.P.L.s in the super-treble. Peculiar solution, as it boosts the entire operating bandwidth.
O.T.O.H., if it were that simple, it would've been implemented by Quad decades ago. I'm contemplating that in real world applications, the diffuser acts like a finned JBL acoustic lens instead. Otherwise, I'd see that tweak on Quad websites. Thus, in fact, the "diffuser" just may very well focus the vary frequencies I wish to disperse. In direct contrast, if I understand correctly, Quad tweakers seem to recommend the removal of front stators atop of the tweeters entirely. This is probably restricted to the modern more-efficient tweeters as this tweak must reduce them by 6dB. It seems en vogue, as it's purportedly much more revealing... as one well can imagine without the de-facto grill.

where speakers are thin & music isn't

Not bookshelf size and using a made-from-scratch ESL panel, not a Quad one, but might provide some inspiration.

I see that Sheldon is still pushing the envelope. That guy is incredible! If I ever manage to score a set of esl speakers I am going to try and send them to him for restoration.
