I asked this question in one of my replies, but i was interested in all your respective views on the utility of DSP for situations like the one I'm in. Just curious.

If you are all digital I have no issue with inserting DSP before the DAC. In an analog system you have an issue with an AD DA cycle, which is still not a transparent process. Most recently trying the KOL device on a friend's system the ADC/DAC brickbats were more distracting than the spatial enhancement was helping.

+10! ;-)
My setup: Oppo BDP-103 acting as a music server (WAV files off a USB hard drive) TOSLINK optical feed to a Behringer DEQ2496 to nearly (but not quite) flatten the in-room response, analog out to a Luminous Audio passive preamp, to APT-1 power amps set up as monoblocks (over 200 WPC) to MMGs. I occasionally put the DEQ on "bypass" to test the effect of NOT using DSP; always turn the DSP back on.
I also have a Parasound zDAC, but after a lot of experimentation, I couldn't hear a consistent difference between it and the DEQ's built-in DAC, making the Behringer an unreal value in my book. I now use the zDAC with my home office computer rig as a headphone based system. Makes my AKG K612s sing!

The DEQ's DAC is based on the AKM chips which were top notch a decade ago. It is still good today, but there are many DACs contemporary with the design that now sell for a fraction of their old price and will outdo it handily. There are newer intermediate cost DACs one generation old using SABRE and newer AKM chips or the Wolfson chips with better clocks and rail voltage (PS) support that now sell for under half of their old retail price.
