I've been experimenting as well, and Wazoo and I have been sharing notes. I pulled my 3.6s out 8 feet from the front wall and put them perpendicular to the side wall, tweeters in and about 30 inches from the side wall. VERY interesting. Moved my listening chair back about 3 feet. At first, it had a huge wow factor, and I thought that was it. But as I played around a bit, there were things about it that bother me a little bit. The speakers did, pretty much, disappear. How you can have a six foot speaker disappear is beyond medisappeared better than any bookshelf speaker I've ever heard. With acoustic and orchestral music, it was amazing. But, with some music with more bass, I think there were some room interactions, and it started to bother me a bit. Also, the vocals weren't quite as tight as I like to have them.
Hard to evaluation something this different. I decided to compromise a little. Instead of having my speakers 5' off the back wall like they were before, they are now 6', and a bit closer to the side wall, tweeters back out, and toed in slightly. So, more of a normal arrangement. For whatever reason, I think I like this bettermaybe because it's closer to what I am used to. And, more what my room was designed for. Who designs a room to put the speakers close to halfway out along the wall??? Very bizarre. Now I have to move all of my gear around a bit as well. I'll post a picture of the setup tomorrow.
This has been interesting.
Follow Ups:
They were most likely optimized for a larger room than 15 foot square.
Empirically, my stats have the flattest measured bass response eight feet out from the back wall - but the room is 26' deep.
Here are some pics. I like that the Lovan racks allow me to angle them towards the listening chair; kind of a cockpit feel, and makes it easier to access the back of the components too.

Just a great set-up...and room...
thanks

I really like that gear arrangement - very cool.
Given infinite time, we might get it right, eh? :)Lifting the amp and the turntable, both about 100lbs isn't fun!

Given infinite time, I might find my favorite. It took me a several years to get around to this arrangement. It violated an a priori assumption. I should know better than to assume that I know the rule book. In truth, these speakers just don't seem to be burdened with a rule book. Lots of setups have sounded wonderful to me. This one, so far, is intoxicating.
I'm glad you found an improvement, as well. It's impossible to try everything, but I guess it's not at all crazy to try what seems crazy. It's actually rather fun. I hadn't moved my Maggies in a while, but I've made a lot of other changes recently. I'm enjoying this one - it's very Rooze-like in the size of the sonic panorama (the sides even seem to wrap around me at times).
This seems to have improved the blending of the Maggies into the immensely powerful and deep bottom end these subs are delivering. I'm waiting for a problem to rear its head, but I haven't detected one yet. I entered tonight's listening session with a different expectation from last night - tonight, I was expecting to be blown away, and it's happening again. This is promising.
Your photo was the impetus, even if the suggestion was Satie's.
The asylum, with all of its faults, is a pretty wonderful place. I would say a great deal of my system has been shaped by ideas and suggestions I've received through the asylum.
And a new rule for anyone buying maggies: buy lots of speaker cable! :)

Great looking set-up! Haven't had time to experiment with ribbons on the outside yet. Apparently outlying tweeters work well in some rigs, not so much in others.
BTW, those Mye stands compliment your Maggies perfectly. (Big thumbs-up)

Thanks. MYE stands are a must, I think.
Poor Grant when he sold me mine...I made him jump through hoops with custom color....Because man must decorate...(arch back, then snap fingers in the air, like you just don't care)
Dark Gray cloth with AL trim, (I really love this color combo, great industrial modern feel)...Mye Audio Stands have the Silver Vein Finish, which you can see...he really knocked out of the park, IMHO...it captures the cloth and trim both...
thanks
