Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
80.189.148.170
Hi and greetings to all,
I am new here having discovered this sub-asylum whilst seeking information about XO's for the Quad/Gradient combination.
Out of the speakers I've heard at home the ESL63s are my favourite and I am hoping to add SW63s.
I bought a pair of very old shabby SW63s (serial number 5) and replaced the driver surrounds.
I have two power amps waiting to go (F series Audiolab 8000P & Audiolab 8000Px) and sources are Michell Gyro SE and an Audiolab CDQ.
Finally the question - can anybody point me towards good sounding crossover options? My budget is limited, there's no way I could afford the cost of Gradient's XO.
I've seen the MT Audio design but it is no longer in production. So am thinking about maybe a simple capacitor in line filter for ESL 63 and maybe a miniDSP or even Behringer device to filter and EQ the bass.
Am a bit perplexed though how I will control the balance between the two lines with this approach.
Has anybody any thoughts how to make this work or suggestions for alternative approaches?
thank you
Robin

You probably want a minimum phase high pass - so go for first order - just a cap before the amp - say at 60-80 hz. A few of us here can build you one in a box for minimal scratch.
For the subwoofer get a good active 3rd order low pass filter but keep the frequency adjustment flexible. Marchand offers a number of options for sub crossovers, look it up on marchandelec.com
The Behringer 2496 (?) is a very flexible option...if...you intend to run the Quads full range...it is NOT suitable for handling the main signal.
And...these things are notoriously unreliable in the long term.
Because the Gradient SW63 is a dipole woofer it needs prodigious power, and some sort of EQ along with its crossover.
The only Xover I have experience with that has only marginal impact on the main signal is the old Dahlquist electronic crossover.
If you can find one, the Dahlquist, with a cap upgrade for the main signal is NEARLY transparent...I have lived with one for years.
But, I do not know how the Dahlquist would work with the dipole woofers although I suspect it is flexible enough.
There are alternatives to the Gradient crossover, see the link below.
