would anyone be able to describe the difference between these 2?

I've owned Quad ESLs (never officially called "57") and several sets of M-Ls including the CLS and the small "Source" hybrid. I have heard the Aerius, but have not owned them. The M-L produce a large sound and will play much louder than the Quad. I can play Fanfare for the Common Man or "Po Lazarus" on the Source at room shaking levels--no way would the Quad ESL ever do that. I suspect that the damping on the backside of the Quad alters the imaging somewhat. The M-L produce a sound stage that extends well beyond the outer edges of the speakers. My Quads never did that. What bass the Quads produce I always found pleasant and musical. I believe that the weakest aspect of both the CLS and Source is their low frequency coloration. I do not find their bass to be particularly natural sounding and at times it is overstated and can be fatiguing. I don't think the M-L give up anything significant in terms of detail and reproduction of vocals to the Quad ESL.
I had the 57s in my system for about 10 years and, although I never purchased the Aerius, I had them at home for about a week. I don't think the Aerius are in the same league as the Quads. They (Aerius) will probably play a little louder and go a little lower in the bass (although I am not at all certain that this is the case) but these are the only areas in which they may be superior to the 57s (IMHO).

etc.... at a lot lower than 450. :-)

I've owned both. Problem is 57's... they are 40 to 60 years old. Most pairs sound different depending on what shape they're in. Unless you're dealing with a completely refurbed pair I can't say how any particular 57 will sound.
The 57 is, of course, far superior in the midrange and has that uncanny Quad 'listening through the speaker to the performance' effect. They will be far more coherent through the frequency range.
The Aerius i will play louder (a touch) and have wider dispersion.
