Their not called subs, their called woofers. Don't be so cheap ! The hobby cost money, money was printed to spend :^)
Well , I'm not going to justified the price, but the fact is if one wants true ribbon Magnepan sound ( with a new model) and their room and/or budget cannot accommodate the 3.7s, this is the only other option as of now.
My listening room happens to fit in the size requirements stated in the article, and I listen fairly nearfield. So this could be an option for me down the road. I don't look at their woofers as subs, but when doubled, as the bottom third of a three way speaker. This is a good thing in that it is physically isolated from the upper potion.
And I'm already good in the sub department, with 2-12" sealed and 4-15" IB subs. Who knows, maybe the Maggie woofers can make the two 12"ers unnecessary.
The closest other option for my room and budget, for a new Magnepan speaker may be the 1.7, although the size may be pushing it. And I know how you feel about those. :^)
In a few years these will be hitting the used market, they will be easy to ship, and the price may be more agreeable.
Judging from the article and my own exposure to the minis, I think you're on the right track.
To be sure, I did not feel like they could replace larger Maggies if left on a desk. The article fills in with good information about an alternative position. It makes sense. Hopefully there is a dealer close to you were you can get to play with the minis. One thing is crystal clear...the minis.
Not that I'm reading to pull the trigger anytime soon, but Virginia now appears to have only one Magnepan dealer. Gifted Listener up near DC. And I'm down in Va Beach. Actually the dealer in Raleigh, NC may be closer, but not by much. So will have to work it into one of my out of towners this year. If and when later, I can always do the dealer drop-ship program.
