I don't know what is available in your market. Good bang for the buck (rand) may not translate that well into SA. But generally, Parasounds, PS Audio, Aragon (now gone) and more recently Wyred 4 Sound and to a lesser extent Emotiva are very good, and Adcom's 58xx series too. for a different tack, try a Jungson 88 or 99 class A amp from China, just note that some samples of the 99 might roll off slowly at 16khz rather than 20+ khz so if you hear that far up you might find particular samples to lack a bit of sparkle.

Hi Satie
Of the amps you mention, only the Parasound and Wyred4sound are available here. As far as bang for the buck, let me give you an example. The Parasound Halo A21 retails for approx $4667 (taking into account the current exchange rate). I'm not sure what it retails for in the States but would you consider this a reasonable price to pay for this amp?
I see that a roundtrip ticket from Johanesburg to NY is about $1100. Assuming you can bring the parasound A21 thru customs without too much trouble (might be a big assumption) why not have a few days vacation in the US and bring back an amp for just about what you pay for the same there in South Africa?
Once again, thanks to all for your helpful suggestions. The only problem, and it's a very big problem, with buying from the States or Europe is that if something should go wrong with the unit. The local agents, assuming there are local agents, would never repair it. It would be classed as a gray product and they wouldn't touch it. It would be too much of a risk and not worth the hassle. The thought of going to the States for a holiday is appealing though, although the idea of carrying a 25kg amp undetected through customs is really scary!
Hey Prega,
In the states it goes for $2300. But only you can decide if the local price is reasonable.
Of course double what it is here sounds crazy but we often pay crazy prices for all kind of things based on our locale.
For instance my 1200 sqft house. I could buy 6 or 7 similarly sized houses in some parts of the country, but I cant think of a better place to live and dont mind spending the money.
I would LOVE to pay double what the going price for a 1200 square foot home costs in say Florida for instance.
Afterwards we discovered faith; it's all you need
