is gon... I guess the beta is done or audiogon is done - either way its not up
Follow Ups:
Beware - my work PC caught one from there yesterday (Security Essentials)
They are probably addressing that so stay away for a while until they have it under control

a shame
may the bridges I burn - light the way....
yep... The 'gon is a mess. I can't see how to search by zipcode anymore. If I'm going to buy anthing even remotely high-end that is used I want to see the piece myself and meet the person selling it to size up the situation.
I also posted a forum question on one of the Audiogon threads about the zipcode search situation nearly two weeks ago and my post has not yet appeared.
I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the previous incarnation of their site, and can't see what they are trying to achieve with the changes..
I wish they would have kept their old site.
Apparently one of the founders quit in disgust, lots of people were canned. Word is there's no security anymore and the site is currently infested with a trojan. Maybe that's why it was down? It's up now, I just checked.
After it lit up my AV program, I haven't been back! I don't know when I'll try shopping there again. But it'll be awhile.
Dumb-asses!
You are correct. I was browsing several days ago. And the web page activated my Trend Micro AV program - blocked process. It didn't quarantine any files, tho.
Based on previous experience with these ad-based infections, I looked in the usual places where files were & found 2 in a sub-directories in Local Settings/Application Data/Sun/Java/Deployment and another one named 0.******.exe. Same file name structure as several fake AV infections used. And I deleted them all.
Be aware!
Since audiogon now set up for more ads, it is definitely far less secure and susceptible to malware from trojans like the fake antivirus scams.
exploiting java to deliver payloads to your PC is very common.
The audiogon owners royally f'd up. Unless they put in some security enhancements & be selective on whose ads they are hosting, it will be a lot less secure for malware.
Ouch! I for one am going to stay away. Hope the Asylum can make a success of its alternative.
Josh
Does the Asylum have a sale site ? if so what the link ?
Thanks
Russ
Pretty hard to find, isn't it? They're in the process of upgrading it so it should be more accessible in the near future.
Thanks Josh, the new Audiogon site is a disaster! I used to buy and sell there, but it's not user friendly now.
Russ
Yeah, everyone's been saying that, which is why they're trying to bolster the Asylum's classifieds. There's a real need for an alternative now.
It's working. I just sold my Audio Note kit amp to a guy in NY.
No issues so far.
Some of it is still not working (their revision is apalling) but most of it is.
There is a mini Grand at a decent price and apparently good shape.
very very tempting! anyone heard these?
Yes, I was very impressed.
It is not a small speaker though, if that remains an issue for you. About the size of an Acoustat Monitor 3 - a little wider and much taller. perhaps by more than a foot.
It is more dynamic than your A stats and has good extension and plays louder - generally without strain but for a narrow band in the upper midrange where it can sound screechy at seriously high volume. I don't think that is a make or break and the mini Grand generation of the Stage suffered less from it than earlier ones. And there is an XO cure for it. Outside of the MG20.1 all ribbons I heard have that problem to some extent.
Yes, very good speaker system
Here's a review:
I have had in the past most Apogee speakers. This includes the stage and mini grand.
In my opinion the Stage was one of the best Apogee or planar speakers ever made.
But the woofer ribbons cannot be repaired.
Once the foam cushioning the ribbon form the mdf woofer frame disintegrates the woofers develops a sonic buzz.
You can mitigate to a degree with weather-stripping, but the buzz is there and can't be fixed.
The tweeter can be replaced with a new Graz tweeter.
The buzz can be alleviated by replacing the bass ribbon, but that has to be done by one of the approved service technicians and can't be a DIY job. It does get a bit expensive, especially because you need to crate these to ship and they get very heavy.
