I just received my first pair of Magnepans. I heard the original MG1 at a shop and liked them so oredered the MMGs. Just wondering if they have a break in period like other speakers. I am used to Fostex drivers and their long break in period.

  I am a new member here and also a new owner of MMGs. I am using new Outlaw M2200 mono amps to drive the MMGs. I have just realized a new step up in sound quality, i.e. Drums now sound much better than they did at first. I now have about 200 hrs on them.
  
  I have been lead to believe that the MMGs will continue to improve up to about the 400 hour mark.

    I am a new MMG owner and am trying to find a moderately priced ($3000 or less) integrated amp to drive them. I bought an Onkyo A-9555 recommended on Stereophile's budget component list; however have blown out two (2) of them.
    
    Although the literature and the Onkyo helpline say that they are rated for 4 ohms after one session. The next morning I turn on the amp and it is fried.
    
    Consequently, I am looking for an integrated amplifier that will drive the MMG's and their 4ohm load comfortably and musically without breaking the bank.

      jotajay - Not sure why you are restricting yourself to an integrated. At the generous price point you indicated, you should be able to get a very good pre and a 200W (4Ohms) power amp. I drive my MMGs with a 200W amp and I think that figure represents a minimum.

  Thanks for the info. The breakin is not bad at all. With Fostex drivers there is a breakin period and it is the drivers because most of the time they don't use a crossover. I did notice that the sound does change quite a bit when standing compared to when sitting down. I think I will try to lift them up about 12" and see what happens. That is why I was asking about the breakin period. I don't want to mess with them too much untill they are broken in.

  It's the XO parts that need the break in, not so much the driver I think.
  
  I have modded a lot of "brand new" speakers and they rarely sound any different from "old" speakers. I think the belief is new drivers are tight and need to loosen a bit, and this may indeed be true for really new drivers but the truth is they often are not.
  
  I had a guy send me "new" 1.6's (just purchased) this past year and he phoned magnepan with the serial numbers and found they were made in 2002. That means they were sitting somewhere for 7 years, so I am sure in that time the driver "relaxed". I know I would have.
  
  That said from what most people say 20-60 hours is all it should take to "loosen" them to full extension. The XO will take longer.

  Give them about 40 hours of playing time and the low frequency response will improve.
