Third American into space, first to orbit. He was 95.
Follow Ups:
The word "hero" is often tossed around pretty loosely these days. I'm not big on replying to obituaries, but John Glenn is a real American hero.As a little kid, I was fascinated by the space program. It might have been 1958 when I watched the TV as Alan Shepard became the first U.S. astronaut in space. "The Mercury Seven" as they were called, with John Glenn among them. Somewhere in a box, I have a model of both the Mercury and Gemini capsules.
In my adult life, I practically came unglued when I had the opportunity to teach some computer classes at... The Johnson Space Center in Houston. What an awesome and special experience that was! Seeing "Rocket Park" and Mission Control was overwhelming.
The clips of John Glenn which they've played on the news are just amazing. It's hard to imagine somebody saying "Sure, I'll sit on top of that rocket and go 18,000 miles an hour around the Earth. Why not?"
