You live in SF in the old missionary area or nearby? Which I briefly visited back in 1997, when I was there for a HL7 working groups conference at the Grand Hyatt on Union Square. So, are these street parades by Mexicans, or by the remaining people from the aboriginal Indians of the area?
Cute kid, too!

Friends of ours lead Xiuhcoatl Danza Azteca based here and they had a huge, FALL pow wow inviting various other groups for over 100 dancers.
Some folks traveled hundreds of miles to participate.
It's a long ceremony capped off by about six hours of drumming/dancing. It encompasses Latin folk, many whose roots can be traced back to the Mayan/Aztecan/indigenous cultures. People of every color BTW, and (obviously) size and shape.
The Headress of The Day pics posted are from CarnavalSF at the link.
The neighborhood is The Mission - but I'm sure there is still plenty of Missionary action going on here!
