On October 17, 1989, I was a freshman a UC Santa Cruz's Crown College. The dining halls opened at 5:00p. We wanted to grab a quick dinner, and then gather in lounges, to watch Game 3 of the Bay Bridge Series. Never made it. As soon as I got my tray of food, the Loma Prieta quake struck. It was strong enough, that I could not stand. I had to put my tray on the ground. Luckily I was far enough from the milk dispenser, which fell to the floor. Many of us walked to the Great Meadow, where helicopters from SoCal landed. After inspections, one building at a time was declared safe for re-entry. I didn't get into my dorm, until after midnight. While I had no luck contacting my Bay Area relatives, I was able to call my grandmother in Honolulu. I told her that I was safe, and to try to get a hold of my family.
After the quake, one of the first local albums to come out was Joe Satriani's Flying In A Blue Dream. Hard to believe that was a whopping 27 years ago.

Yep- Lummy,
I had just left S.F. a month prior.
so didn't feel anything while driving. It was noticeable in Sacramento by others tho. Swimming pools sloshed.
I was doing hazardous waste/Superfund/hazmat response work for the State of Cal at the time, so I got to spend the next number of days and probably weeks working on the cleanup. I remember authorizing the purchase of body bags, for one thing. A colleague of mine lost his wife in the freeway collapse.
I've had one little trembler whilst in NZ.
That was enough for me.
I don't know how you can live there .....
Cheers,
John K
Hell, I'm glad I left Oklahoma 26 years ago! Quakes there are starting to rival CA!

sittin' at a traffic light in Sunnyvale, on my way home to Milpitas... it took me four hours to get home.
Next day, I had to go to Chicago for work (flying from SJC). They were surprised to see me there when I showed up.
all the best,

...I was in my office in downtown Oakland in the area that used to be called "Pill Hill" on Telegraph at 30th.
My company was in the process of being acquired and my new boss was visiting - he had left about an hour earlier and driven down the 880 freeway (which collapsed) to get to the airport and fly home to Florida.
One of my employees brought in our new disaster plan as the building started shaking.
We looked out the window and people were streaming into the street from the bar across the street.
I headed home and met my wife who had just arrived with our daughter.
We turned on the TV to see a replay of the World Series game interrupted, the section of the Bay Bridge had collapsed, the 880 freeway pancaked, the fire in the Marina (shown over and over so that you thought San Francisco had burned down) and all of the other damage done.
Too bad that the various governmental agencies didn't have the foresight to rebuild the bridge to accommodate future traffic at 9 am.
A "golden" opportunity missed.
:)
...too true.
Rush hour starts now about 5am.
We've needed another bridge across the bay for years and it's only going to get worse.
BART - public transit - is bursting at the seams.
It was last November. I was on my Great Bay Area Audio Adventure. At 8:05 am, I left my Berkeley hotel to go to South San Francisco to meet Dave at McCune Audio/Video/Lighting (mccune.com), for a 9 am tour. I figured it'd take maybe 30-45 minutes to go 15 miles. Was I wrong!! I called him at about 8:50 to say that I was almost to the toll booth to go over the Bay Bridge. He said, and I quote: "OK, I'll see you in about an hour." Well, I drove into their parking lot at... 9:50.
Good thing he's a nice guy!
:)
I was in Santa Barbara - had a big pot of chili and a fresh beer- just settled in for Game one of the 'Bay-Bridge' series....
Happy Listening
Had just left the basement of City Lights and was walking down Columbus when it hit.
Lost my footing as a huge glass window fell out of a storefront a couple feet in front of me.
Some guy walked by looking terrified.
"Good one!" I said to him. He looked even more terrified.
It was VERY, VERY quite and calm as the dust settled, even WITH the car alarms blaring.
Walked home to 41st Ave & Judah from there amongst the exodus.
Always felt Blessed I hadn't stayed in City Lights for another four minutes and had missed that huge pane of glass.
