Probably because the NHL pays much, much more than any other pro hockey league so the best players tend to play there.
Shame really because I like hockey but only if it is played on international sized rinks.
The narrow NHL rinks turn a beautiful game of skill and (some) violence into a barroom brawl.
NHL is great to watch but only if both teams have a player sin-binned.
Follow Ups:
Players are too big and fast these days to make the NHL game in those small rinks of any interest. Too many goals are scored by luck, bouncing in off someone else's leg, skate, hip, etc.
The International game, with it's larger ice surface, still offers some skills to be on display, passing, skating, shooting.
The NHL needs to either make the rink bigger (which they won't do because of revenue loss), or just play 4-on-4 at full strength to allow skills to be on display. I'm tired of watching a game being decided by a lucky bounce.
I just like hockey period. I enjoy both styles of play, NHL and international. To be fair, the NHL is virtually brawl free compared to the way things used to be back in the day. Remembering the way things were back in the 1970's for example. The outlook on fighting is completely different today. That is not to say though that it is completely free of fisticuffs. I would prefer there were no fighting, but the degree to which it happens in today's games is nothing compared to the way things were.
Players skill (or lack of) really shines.
8^)
