Guessing it's much cheaper than most German cars; the Chevy Chevette sold plenty in its day, doesn't mean it's a better car.
New and exciting; any time a new car (that finally had IRS) hits the market it can generate uncommon sales figures.
Follow Ups:
other than the Mustang that are price comparably to the Mustang and yet they choose the Mustang.Just saying.

The Mustang is new in its option of IRS & power (and still to some degree its design). It's fast, affordable (compared to most German models), handles reasonably. It should sell well. How long was it the best selling? Curious...
Grant
Keep in mind that it just started to be marketed in Germany. The Mustang is very iconic the world over.Lets be honest, there are songs and movies about the car since the day it was born in 1964.

There were songs and movies about the VW beetle also, one of the ugliest cars ever made. Songs and movies about the Corvette, Lincoln, Cadillac, Cobra, Mercury... my 409, Lowrider...
But yes, of course, the Mustang is one of few very iconic cars. Personally in most years, in "equal" model line, I'd take a Camaro before a Mustang (particularly very new, the new Camaro's are sharp). The new Mustang is nice, although the interiors are definitely nothing to write home about, too retro for one (should have left the interior modern IMO).
I like both the Camaro and the Mustang. The new Mustangs will be using the 5.2 liter flat plane crank in the coming years.I can mod and work on any of the Ford,GM,or Chrysler products being those are the cars I teach off of.We have several cars donated by the big three each year and we use them for educational purposes.
Notice most all those Iconic cars were American.Right now collectors in Denmark are going after the tri-five Chevys and the Ford Retractable HT cars. They are paying big bucks for them.

My FIL has a HT retractable; IIRC 1959 Galaxie? I should tell to him to either drive it once in a while, or sell the thing.
Sell it to me..I have a 70 cougar convertible but I would love a retractable as well..

If you like I will let you know if/when he puts it up for sale. He has a bit of a stable of cars (most nothing special) that his kids are bugging him about selling, says he might purge a bit.
Newer Mits Eclipse vert (DD)
F150 (semi-DD)
'59 Galaxie HT retractable
'66 T-Bird
Chevy pick up
Another Chev pick, maybe Ford?
And then all the small items (Motor cycle trike, snowmobile, trail bike, trike, quad, dune buggy... he even has a forklift on his property). Never uses any of it other than the 2 DD's.
Loved my '69 Cougar, nice cars (69 & 70 only for me)
The 69 and 70 are my favorite Cougars of that era.I have had a 79 Cougar,an 83 Cougar LS,an 87 XR7,and my 89 XR7 V6 3.8 SC.
