Is that a growing thing in the USA? Filling in for working couples. It sure is down here.
Among the reasons for getting an SUV was ease of exit and entry for us, but also ease of lifting a robust (top size and weight for her age) child out of her car seat, at a natural working height.
We are getting a child car-seat fitted today and are then going over to look after Ruby, who is on the mend from a virus, while our son who has caught her virus, can get some rest and recover / get back to work this week.
We'll see how it goes.
Another reason for an AWD SUV is our walking hobby. We are surrounded by bushland, and nature reserves within the city and in the surrounding National Parks, some in the Territory, and some in NSWales. While all are accessible most of the year by 2WD vehicles we will feel safer with AWD and 'hill-descent' modes. Especially in snow and rain.
Warmest

Follow Ups:
my brother AND his wife have to work to make ends meat.
I grew up with just my dad working and able to afford all the basics,
it has to do with fiat currency.
Here it's due to the high rates of teenage pregnancies (in some places), high divorce rates, both parents working more often than not, and the high cost of professional child care everywhere.
