It looked like Bolt slacked off in the 200 final to me and he himself stated that he wished he had run harder.
I'm not looking to find fault. Hell no one else can stay with him.
Ledecky could have slacked up in the 400 but she went all out and set a new WR. That's the way to do it.

Yes, you are right. It looked like Bolt slackened at the end of the finals. I thought even when he set the world record in the 100 M two Olympics ago, he relaxed at the end. He could have shaved couple of fractions of a second.
To avoid the irritating slackening in the Heats, the Olympics committee should change the rule of the first and second finishers automatically going into the finals. The best times in the Heats should be in the finals. Then we will get to see some fast races.
Cheers

If the best times were used, it would be more fair. Some heats are more competitive than others, though they are all competitions against world class athelites. Would you rather be in the heat with Bolt or in another heat where you needed to be one or two?
I saw one race where a woman in the heat thought she was 2 not noticing someone on the inside closing. She came in third due to pulling up and had to wait to see if she qualified on time.
You would think that after training for something so hard and with a once in a four year interval, a sensible person wouldn't leave anything to chance as it relates to 1-2 last seconds of effort, but that's me.
Usain eased off when it became clear to him that he wouldn't finish in under 19 seconds which is what he hoped for.
If you want to see a far more serious case of slacking watch the men's triathlon final.
Ali Brownlee stopped, turned around, walked a little backwards and then casually strolled across the finish line to finish 6 seconds ahead of his little brother Jon.
