"What might happen if college education was made available to everyone who qualifies, free of charge?"
One of the things that might happen is this:
College teachers and professors would go find another line of work where they wouldn't be working for free. Ditto for college administrative/managerial/maintenance staff. Next thing you know, there wouldn't be any colleges or universities. Nobody likes working for free, unless they're volunteering their time.
:)
Follow Ups:
Who said anything about teachers working for free? Unless you consider "working for free" receiving all of the food, clothing, shelter, and any other professional, health, and living benefits they might require.
"Who said anything about teachers working for free?"
You wrote something about free college (as others have in other threads, and as some politicians advocate). I fail to see how it can be free, unless the providers are working for free. Otherwise, somebody has to pay the bill, and so, it isn't free.
:)
I meant "free" for the students. Not "free" for the benevolent and wise taxpayers or contributors who might one day willingly choose to support "free education", of course...
Not a new concept. Our public school systems currently provide "free education" for students, at least up to a certain level. And the teachers do get paid or compensated with real money and real benefits in this scenario.
Upon graduation (or failure to graduate), repayment for this "free" education might consist of "free" labor for relevant businesses or institutions for a set period of time. During the repayment period the "debtors" could be provided with basic or low-cost living arrangements (if they so desired) until the debt to taxpayers and/or contributors was fully paid off in "Units of Labor" or calculated labor time.

Yes, I, and everybody, know what you meant. I just wanted to see you say it. Let me put it succinctly:The rest of us would be forced, through additional taxes, to pay for someone else's college education. Put another way: Yet another government program which forcibly takes money out of the pockets of many people who earned it and gives it to other people who didn't earn it.
As if that in itself isn't Socialist enough, you go on to write that a potential method of "repayment" would be to work for free.
Do some people actually think these are good ideas?
I could not even imagine going around the neighborhood asking people to contribute to my kid's college tuition. "Hi, you don't know me, but I live down the street. Would you mind contributing $50, $100, or $500 to my son's college tuition. It'll help to build a better America."
But that's EXACTLY what "free" college would do.

YOU might be "forced" to support free education only in the event that a *majority* of voters and members of Congress favored and passed a "free education" plan of this sort. Yes, we do live in a democracy of sorts.
I feel right in assuming that you would remain in the minority if such a plan came to a vote. And if this is the case, it's no big deal. There are some winners and there are some (so-called) losers in every scheme or plan that gets passed.
We know that "socialist" programs have existed in this country for decades now. Some socialist programs are better than others, and if the socialist program is a *good* one almost nobody complains...
No need to put that word in quotes. Just try not paying your taxes, and see if the IRS says "Nah, don't worry about it".
:)
But if a majority of Americans WANT to pay taxes for services, etc.., then only the minority will complain about such things.
So it's "tough titties" for the few and HOORAY for the majority, I guess. AS always.
Funny too, how we love to point out how the citizens in countries like Denmark pay out so much in taxes (even though the Danes do NOT pay out more money than we do after ALL types of related debts and expenditures are taken into consideration) for social services. HAVE we have forgotten that high taxation rates are only a problem if/when a MAJORITY of citizens THINK that it's a problem?
Why not go around the neighborhood? People who send their kids to private schools on voucher programs or other government subsidy programs are doing exactly that.
And I guarantee that if Bernie Sanders had asked the question: "If you could pay a thousand or 1,200 a year in additional federal taxes and never have to worry about health insurance or college tuition again, would you do it?", 90 percent of those responding would have said yes.
I agree that Americans pay too much in taxes, considering how much they still have to shell out for health care and higher education.
Gengeuo, you ask who said anything about teachers working for free. Well the answer should be obvious. Genius Inmate51 said it. Can a human be any stupider? UC used to be free and it looks like tuition is free or near free in Germany,Denmark, Finland, Norway, Slovak Republic, Solvenia. Sweden and Turkey and maybe to some extent Mexico. And they get paid money, dinero, gelt. I have to explain this?? The guy doesn't have even a third grade intellect.
Personally, I could care less if the transferance of money as a method of "compensation" ceased to exist forever. If basic needs are met and natural desires are caressed, I'm more than happy. Why not replace money with "Units of Labor"?
