Not an upgrade per se. For the last decade we have had refinements of their OSX. The next one will be rebranded as macOS, and it will make several models of previous computers (desk and laptops) obsolete. I have a mid-2009 model MacBook Pro that is in pristine condition, yet is on their hit list. I don't consider it to be that old.
The macOS coincides with their iOS for phones and other OS's for other Mac toys.
The upshlot -- and this is just my opinion -- is that Apple is working itself out of the computer biz, noting that people only want the social, gaming, and surfing stuff.

considering I use loudspeaker drivers that were made in the early 1960s, I think it's safe to say that I fall into that camp, too.

I blow a driver, I shop new speakers. Its come to that.
Thats a shame but not a surprise. 2009 is not hold either to me.
