How many of us take steps to only patronize businesses that hire citizens and documented aliens? Not very many, I'd wager.
How many of us want to pay an extra xx% (whatever the number is) to cover the cost of paying citizens and documented aliens to do the work that illegal aliens do now? Just about nobody, I'd wager.
You're right to identify demand as the issue, but I think the demand goes higher up the food chain.
Happy listening,

How would one know if a business hires only documented workers?
Do all employees have their green card taped to their foreheads or do you rely on the word of the owner?
There are ways to verify ss numbers and that itself is part of the problem. Also I hate when people say illegals dont pay taxes. If they use a fake ss# and plenty do they cant file and get their tax refund, federal or state. Just more BS from the haters by tjose that claim they dont pay taxes. Then they pay taxes on gas and utility bills and every other thing they buy.

The brexiters over here had some equally convoluted ways to subconsciously justify their racism to themselves.
According to them migrants were flooding into the UK to live of state benefits while at the same time taking our jobs.
Unfortunately the internet enabled people to live in their own virtual reality where they never encounter opposing view points, the traditional mass media is lying at all times and experts are either wrong or part of a conspiracy. People have become factproof.
I think the demand is not by you and me but the power structure. I also think its too easy to say we are all at fault. Ive been preaching this line for twenty years and Id give up plenty. Remember the bipartison bill in the eighties sponsored by Simpson and I forget the dem where they gave immigrants a free ride and said they would start to enforce the law? BS. They never have.
If we had even halfway better economic distribution of wealth those dirty jobs would pay enough and have benfits to draw the citezenry to them. The power structure isnt gking to give up what they fought over fifty years to get. The top tax rate was over 80 percent when Ike was president. The corporations and business also paid about 25-30 percent of the tax load then too. So the GDP has gone up astronomically since and yet the business tax load is down to 5-7 percent now by most estimates.
We have multiple problems on multiple fronts.

Believe me, Donald will fix it. Believe me. The wall will put thousands of people to work. Concrete workers, steel workers... The punishing of employers, the elephant in the room so to speak, would just be too dam practical and would actually work. Who in the power structure actually wants that? Believe me.
