In Reply to: RE: Can nasal irrigation replace the use over-the-counter allergy meds? posted by genungo on July 20, 2016 at 09:34:37
I have a tendency to sinus infections and hay fever.
I've been douching using a saline solution for nasal irrigation for a long time. Now using a NeilMed battery-powered Sinugator, and their packaged sachets. Apart from the cleaning it can also help maintain the moisture level of the air you breathe. Which is what your nasal sub-system is for.
I was born with narrow passages & a deviated septum, and had a knee or two to the face in rugby football.
Two sinus surgery operations; one in my thirties via star-punch (ask?), one in my late forties via endoscope - which last actually worked. Then, learning the habit of breathing through my nose on a Buteyko course.
First time? The ENT surgeon wouldn't even do it if I didn't stop smoking. I stopped cold-turkey that week! Held a pyre ceremony in the back-yard incinerator. I still am a nicotine addict, I just don't use anymore.
Noting that air conditioning of the drying type is bad for your sinus system as it dries the air unless you can keep Rh up to about 45%.
Because Canberra is inland, high-up (5-800m ASL), and in hot dry SE Australia, we use whole of house ducted evaporative cooling, and ducted gas heating with a US brand humidifier added. All to keep the Rh up to 45% or a bit higher, for my nasal health.
But now I'm holding Rh at 45-50%. Having bought a pair of QUAD 63s which need 45-50%.!!
I have since become aware that some A/C systems can provide Rh control! But this is at some cost to cooling efficiency *. and
I probably need to install a *smallish? split system for the L-shaped lounge-dining room to keep its Rh at 45% or lower, during Summer.
That might give me some experience of how many KW of whole house AC cooling and Rh control we would need, given the lowered efficiency! So if the evap. system doesn't last as long as we do here, I'll know what to install.
I think that ought to hold you for a while. ;-).

Fluticasone (Flonase) or similar?
Saline douching just works.
