According to a recent post on the website Reddit, a member of the U.S. Army decided to get cheeky when he was denied leave to attend a baby shower.
The post is aptly titled, "Army Specialist was denied leave to go to a baby shower because his CO said 'Men don't go to baby showers', so he changed his reason."
It features before and after photos of a form requesting leave. In the first image, the reason for request listed on the form is "baby shower." Those words have been crossed out in red pen, and the phrase, "Men don't attend baby showers" has been added. Apparently the specialist's superior was displeased with his desire to attend an event traditionally frequented only by women.
So the specialist made a second request, and tailored it to the tastes of his CO, who apparently is fond of antiquated gender stereotypes. The reason for leave on the second image is written as follows:
"Going home to the Appalachian mountains to drink whiskey, wrestle bears, and shoot lots of guns. I also plan to grow out a beard, chop down 100 trees with my axe and eat 10lbs of thick cut bacon with my wife, whom I plan to have lots of unprotected sex with, because I am a man and that's just what we do. Football."

Not that there's *necessarily* anything wrong with that. It's just that I don't know of a man who could stomach more than 5 minutes of incessant giggling, cooing, oohing, awwing, and other forms of *girl talk*...
y'know just a bunch of guys together celebrating life with a few kegs, some Jack, Vodka, bourbon. Only thing else you'd need is a doll baby to practice diapering on and some sharp anecdotes.
Btw I highly discourage using real baby at one of these parties.
I don't know how the women deal with this issue.
...couples baby showers are a thing now.
Next, it'll be mad couples weekend at the outlet shops!
8^)
you just have to remind me. I did attend my wife and I first baby shower and I might add that I felt out of place, well actually I wasn't the only one as there were 3 of us men there. Needless to say, I and the other two men excuse ourselves and went to the bar instead.
Would I attend another baby showers perhaps, but only if they have an open bar.

My faith in humanity has been temporarily restored.
As I recall, the "reason" block on the request form was always penciled in 'personal'. Unless absence would cause a workplace problem; then more explanation might be needed.
please send me a PM with a e-mail addy. I have some news I think you will want to hear. Thanks
I'm pretty sure if this were a woman her request would've been denied as well.I wonder if this person's unit was Stateside or overseas.
I can't speak for the Army but in my 21 yrs in the Navy I can't ever recall needing a reason to take leave. The only thing required was at least 30 days notice in advance.
'Emergency leave' or last minute request to take off generally does require a reason and if that was the case in the above article (sorry I didn't read it) I'm not at all surprised it got denied.
Many may not agree or perhaps understand that a CO has a responsibility in keeping his/her unit 'combat ready'; daily reports are sent to their chain of command stating this and they're held accountable. Everyone who signs up knows this.
As far as the this guy's comments regarding 'guys don't attend baby showers', I guess we're in a new era, new attitudes, so on so forth,.. including men going to baby showers.

Green Lantern;
Well stated.
The commander has a obligation to be be mission ready. The military's first priority is to brutally vanquish the enemy and take away their will to fight and live......NOT hand out MREs to refugees.
Stomp their ass's into a mud hole and walk it dry......
Meat; It's the right thing to do. Romans 14:2
Sorry, the military isn't Walmart. He was indeed asking for emergency leave, a ridiculous reason, NOT because of his gender (although his superior probably should've kept his mouth shut) but because 'parties' are not a valid reason to take emergency leave.Had he been asking for regular leave with adequate notice (and then denied) then yes, he has a legit reason to be pissed.
What many don't understand is if you allow this guy to take "emergency" leave for a 'baby shower' not only will you have to grant everyone else's request (for similar ridiculous reasons), but your own superiors will wonder if you're even capable of being a leader. Can you imagine doing a person's work (in addition to your own) for a few days because he (or she!) decided to drop everything to attend a party? C'mon...Again sorry, but that's just the way it is.
