It was a revolver and if you are a man you can learn to shoot it very accurately. A .50 magnum will bring a brown bear down in his tracks. I have shot a 45/70 pistol and a .50. I will take it over ringing bells if faced with one.
Follow Ups:
MANY years ago I had a Thomson Center Contender.
My barrel of choice? The Super 14 in .223 got it done. Shooting off a bench I could ring the chime @200 yards.
I borrowed a 44 mag in 10"? 12"? and it kicked worse.
I would have LOVED, at that time, to find someone to lend me a 45-70 barrel or maybe even one in 30-30.
Not the right tool for Bear, though. UNLESS you think you can get the job done with ONE SHOT.
If I'd bought a 2nd barrel in 22LR or 22Mag, I might still own it. Or maybe 41mag, if as I suspect, 410 shotshells would work in it. Great snake shot piece.
Too much is never enough
I am familiar with the Contender. I have no experience with one but hear they are a excellent target pistol. Hitting targets at 200 yards is outstanding. I shot a lot of rounds through a Magnum Research 45/70. It is a big revolver and recoil was not bad. The .50 mag probably has similar kinetic energy as a 30/06. Velocity is less but the slug is massive. I would wish no one being put in a position of life or death with a brown bear.
