.50 handgun?
I see several listed but WHY? That's just nutty. I can't imagine you WOUDN'T get mauled in hte using. The Desert Eagle fires 'only' about a 300 grain bullet. Sorry,
Too much is never enough

Unless you are alone a .22 would suffice.
Just shoot the other guy in the leg and run.
Here 'ya go.
600 nitro express was the double rifle used in the basement of the ORIGINAL movie 'Tremors'.
Incredible amount of delivered energy and now in a Revolver.
Too much is never enough
Back when I used to shoot a lot I could unshoulder, aim, and *hit* a nearby bullseye target with a rifle faster than most people could unholster, aim, and *miss* the same bullseye target with a big heavy magnum revolver. And I'm talking about "close-quarters" (10 feet away).Handguns are last-ditch weapons. They are compact, they boost the ego, but they also give a false sense of confidence. I'll take a good shoulder arm almost any day of the week - when I'm outdoors, at least.

I think I'd rather have a 20x102mm sniper rifle than that revolver.
Here is one cartridge amongst a few .50BMGs
This is all you need to scare bears away:
:)
I tried to scare away a big guy dressed up in a hairy Sasquatch outfit. Didn't work too well.
It was a revolver and if you are a man you can learn to shoot it very accurately. A .50 magnum will bring a brown bear down in his tracks. I have shot a 45/70 pistol and a .50. I will take it over ringing bells if faced with one.
MANY years ago I had a Thomson Center Contender.
My barrel of choice? The Super 14 in .223 got it done. Shooting off a bench I could ring the chime @200 yards.
I borrowed a 44 mag in 10"? 12"? and it kicked worse.
I would have LOVED, at that time, to find someone to lend me a 45-70 barrel or maybe even one in 30-30.
Not the right tool for Bear, though. UNLESS you think you can get the job done with ONE SHOT.
If I'd bought a 2nd barrel in 22LR or 22Mag, I might still own it. Or maybe 41mag, if as I suspect, 410 shotshells would work in it. Great snake shot piece.
Too much is never enough
I am familiar with the Contender. I have no experience with one but hear they are a excellent target pistol. Hitting targets at 200 yards is outstanding. I shot a lot of rounds through a Magnum Research 45/70. It is a big revolver and recoil was not bad. The .50 mag probably has similar kinetic energy as a 30/06. Velocity is less but the slug is massive. I would wish no one being put in a position of life or death with a brown bear.
I'd imagine it be hard to get two consecutive shots on target with that gun. I've shot 44 Mag Desert Eagle and it's intimidating to use, even at the gun range.
Boy, if you miss that bear or don't hit him with a lethal shot --- you better have a great Plan B.

... while you are shitting and pissing in your pants? Not likely. If backing up slowly does not work, the next best defense is to drop, curl up into a ball. And hope for the best. Wearing a backpack can provide some protection from the mauling as you curl up and pray for deliverance...
A guy from around here invented a backpack pepper-spray system that allows the user to activate the spray while curled up or facing away from an attackl. THAT sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

Good luck with the drop and tuck approach. Be sure to kiss your ass goodbye when you are in that position. I will take the .50
.
.., no matter what we do. It's hard enough to win out against a willful human in a surprise attack situation, much less against a willful bear. Scared/determined animals and even humans have been known to keep moving even with a huge hole in the chest cavity, the adrenaline keeps them going even after they are essentially "killed".That said, the UDAP backpack pepper spray device as sold at Cabelas (no affiliations), might be my first choice in protection.
Although I would not expect to win out in a very determined bear attack.

Any caliber gun may work to scare the beast away. Plain old 9mm semi-auto.
I'm not certain Bears 'scare' in the accepted sense of the word.
They have NO natural predators accept US and are very curious. Having a great sense of smell helps 'em find food.
I was at the MotherInLaw's house this morning and saw a nature video (Thanks NGC) and a full size GRIZZLEY killed a big antlered animal. Elk? NOT Moose.
I might be one of the LAST persons in Southern California to SEE a BEAR in the Wild. This was in about 1980 or so. A buddy of mine and I walked from Heart Bar to High Meadow Springs, all in the San Gorgonio Wilderness.
coming OUT, we rounded a turn and surprised a small Black Bear who was tearing into a log. The Bear? He stood up, than dropped to all fours and RAN for it. This was right at dusk and we barely made it to the car before dark. I'm glad he was a young bear and MOMMA wasn't around.
Too much is never enough
