I just expanded my its a no brainer to drive time to 5-1/2 hours from 4 hours based on the current airport security situation. I will drive farther based on total trip cost, how enjoyable the drive is and my schedule.
What's your no brainer drive time?

Newly verified, there are more planes in the oceans than submarines in the sky.
Let's all adjust our opinions accordingly. We need contemporary thinking.
It is two hours to the airport with high parking rates I would go 6-8 no prob unless it was business and the company was paying.
We would drive to the Adirondacks to camp which was about nine hours because we wanted our 4WD vehicle.

I dislike crowds. I hate standing. I totally hate and despise standing around for no reason. So... I do not fly, Period. I can drive anywhere I actually want to go.
I am retired... I have plenty of time.
I am totally amazed at what sheep Human beings are. Willing to stand in line for hours? Nuts. I am also surprised there have not (yet) been any 'waiting line riots' with dead and maimed TSA agents.
How special are we when stuck in traffic, flipped off, cut off, stopped, or endangered in traffic flow? That mentality isn't specific to any particular mode of travel (or living). It's very packable; goes everywhere. Stay home and barricade. They're out there.
...a private plane for flights and advertise them for common routes.
No lines, no TSA, no wait for luggage.
How much is it worth to you?
...not very far.SF to LA is a boring 500mi 6+ hour drive straight down Hiway 5 - the most interesting sight is a CHP car hiding by an underpass looking for speeders.
In the winter there can be snow on the Grapevine - a high steep grade before the LA area travelled by lots of big rigs who tend to spin out and block the road for hours.
Many people prefer to drive but I always fly.
Round trip ticket is about $150 for the 1hr flight.
I am TSA Pre and I don't mind sitting in the airport reading.
30 minutes to the Oakland airport, park, check-in, TSA screen + wait 90 minutes, 1hr flight, 30 minutes to get luggage if I check it, another 30 minutes to rent a car - max. 4 hrs - I've saved 2 hrs and I'm relaxed when I arrive.

Agreed. Several years ago -- pre-911 -- George Will wrote an article demonstrating that if your destination is 4 hours away, by car, you can get there just as fast by driving instead of flying. Now that the TSA lines have slowed things considerably, I suspect that 4 hour rule can be expanded to 5 or 6.
...probably makes sense flying from NY, DC or Chicago.
It depends upon the available time I have to reach my destination.
If I'm allowed sufficient time to plan my trip I'd prefer either to drive or take the Amtrak, even across the country.
I hate airlines, the TSA, and airports so flying is at the bottom of my list.
I understand your thinking. On the other hand...When I was a kid (pre-Amtrak), the couple hour train ride to Milwaukee or Chicago was great fun. I still remember the Black conductor coming through the car announcing "RAY-cine" (Racine, WI). So, as a dad, I decided to take my kid on a train ride, just for the experience. It was fun for the first couple of hours, but the overnight ride on Amtrak from Dallas to Chicago was excrutiating. I think a person would have to either be poor or have a phobia in order to willingly take Amtrak cross-country.
By the way (BTW), Amtrak SHOULD be spelled "AmTrack", but the morons who run it can't even figure that out.
Never again, unless absolutely necessary.

If traveling in the states I do not fly, my policy since 9/11. It used to be so comfortable and fun, and now it sucks. I like to drive anyway.
One scenario: Drive to, park, check in, walk to and through, TSA fondling, time to gate, to wait at gate, get all on board and settled, push back, and taxi.
Then rinse and repeat at destination end, retrieve bags, arrange ground travel, then travel ground.
How far can you drive in 3 to 4 hours? Then add an extra 2 hours worth of distance for compensation of strenuous stress and hassle. Flying distance needs to exceed that.
6 hours of driving at 60 mph = 360 miles; about an hour of flying; making total air time investment of say, 7 hours. This makes a good equivalent; no overnight charges.
That's a pretty good summary! I'd also add: How long will you be at the destination, what are your travel needs while "there", and how much luggage and stuff do you need to bring along? For example, we always drive the 900 miles from north Dallas to Chicagoland or MadCity (Madison, WI), 'cause there's FOUR of us - airline tickets, baggage fees and car rental add up! On the other hand (OTOH), if I'm going to L.A. for an AES convention, where I don't really need a car, and it's just me for 3 days, there's no way I'm driving a thousand miles, although, as a 24 year old, I drove from Green Bay to L.A. to do that, but those daze are over.
Speaking of "the good old days", I used to fly from Dallas (on Southwest) to Austin, Houston or San Antone and rent a car - and come back that same evening. These days, Austin is a no brainer - drive. San Antonio and Houston are iffy. So, yes, the Muslim radicals have accomplished at least part of their idiotic mission - they've made it more expensive and take longer to get from point A to point B and back. But guess what?: Even with all their lofty rhetoric, you still don't see millions of people trying to get into Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc. illegally. Go figure.

It depends.
Distance isn't the only factor.
