The city council voted down a proposal to sell a city block to a developer for about $20 million for the purpose of building an indoor sports arena. The five that voted no were all women and tweets afterward were quite abusive.
Oh by the way Seattle has no NBA or NHL team. The old Supersonics are now the OKC Thunder. And oh by the way if the developer got the land the city would have been on the hook for $200 million in corporate welfare to help pay for the arena estimated to cost about $500 million total.
You all know I like sports a lot but not at taxpayer expense. These millionaire and billionaire team owners can build their own stadia with their money not ours. Jack Kent Cooke paid for the now Fed Ex field and made a provision to give it to the local government after thirty years. Oh by the way the Seattle government made its last payments on the Kingdome fifteen years after it was destroyed....oops!

Its a city of high roller developers, with the likes of Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks, et al. There is a tendency to think that no one can say no to the big market projects. The congestion in the arena part of the cith is already off the charts. Amazon is taking over a huge tract in downtown Seattle, driving everyone else crazy, but Bezos has gotten everything he wants so far.
Somrhing that neds to be known up front about the sports arenas is the money generated makes the schemes desirable. its not all just dead financial weight.
It was the correct decision. I'm still pissed off about the dome. Those clowns sure know how to spend other people's money.
Thats for sure and what a horrible venue it was. The new park is nice.
