Curious question.
How many people use a main system that costs
more than the car they drive?
I've been driving the same truck for 25 years
But continue to change and upgrade my system.
In short- my audio costs more than my car.
And I'm ok with that.
Follow Ups:
Take your pick, audio gear or bicycles.
Either would exceed the value of my 2000 Ford Ranger, had it for 14 years.
The only way to pay for a car is to drive it. That makes me wonder why we don't have better sound systems in our cars? A friend of mine has a Toyota Pickup...the entire roof is an electrostatic speaker that sounds good. A good question is how many have a subwoofer in their car?
I like that idea!

Currently all are either comparable in age - or the Hi-Fi is older -
I drive a '95 jetta with over 200K miles
the main rig:
Music Reference RM-9 out of production for 20 years
ProAc Response 3s - need to replace the surrounds...
TT: VPI 19jr w/ SME 309 arm
Pre-amp - new in '93 - AI M-3
2nd system-
Luxman receiver and Quad'57s
I think that they are all a wash at this point - as far as value-

The value of my systems used to approach the value of my cars.
Over the past ten years I have slowly downgraded my system a bit at a time until I got to the point where it was "good enough". That's all I need of a system anymore. I wish I'd discovered this long ago.
As a result, my cars will now always be worth more.
I also ask more of my cars. What is the equivalent of 200,000 miles driven in hours of listening pleasure?
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I have always lived on the principle that a nickel spent on a car is a dime down the drain. Kind of learned that quite early on, when it was more like a quarter down the drain on the type of cars "kids" used to typically have back in the day...
Maybe if I lived in a place where you could drive more freely, like in the country etc., or like it used to be here maybe 30+ years ago. It is hard to find good places to enjoy driving, and though I know some great ones, they are still a couple hours away. Track time is expensive, and not what I prefer to do.
I often get rid of cars 10-15 years old, sometimes in the 20s like one of mine now, and they rarely have 50k miles on them. They just rot away here. I actually like walking and taking public transportation...must have been head-dropped as a child.
So because of that, sometimes my only car isn't worth half of what a single one of the 9 amps in my main system, let's say the oldest one, would fetch on the used market. To be more accurate, they aren't worth a tenth, scrap value really, even though perfectly working etc. The book value and thus the market value is zero, because they aren't in the book and aren't old enough to be "classic".
Really, you don't need much of a system at all to have it be "worth" more than a perfectly serviceable car. Or more than pretty much any non-exotic car that's more than ~8 years old.
My truck is not quite as old as yours, but close. Twenty-three years old. I just spent a bit of coin on upgrading amps, and yes, my system is worth FAR more than my truck. And I am more than okay with that. My truck only gets me from here to there, but my system makes me happy.

My ReVox A77 tape deck cost more than the car I was driving at the time (a used '68 or so Chevrolet Bel Air which I bought for about $300 - this was in 1977). Ditto for my Schoeps dual-pattern condenser mics. I think the Valley People mic preamps cost about the same as my car.I still have and use the tape deck, the mics, and the preamps. The cars are long gone. My current car is a 1999 Nissan Maxima, which I bought new in late 1998. Haven't had a car payment in years. Although, I'm a little insulted that when a young hottie hit it last year, her insurance company 'totalled' it... for $2,300, saying it's only worth about $700! My goal is to get hit often enough that the claims will cover my initial cost.

So funny. My dad sold cars and I got the truck
New in 1995. Since then have had 3 fender benders
And the truck has a salvaged title. Got about 2000
Each accident but only paid 6500 for car!
Next accident- assuming no injuries- and I'm
Making money.
Never got anything new because have been living
Urban and street parking.
Plus- every time I think about new car I realize that
Truck has started every time for almost 26 years!
Yet I continue to buy audio gear when everything
Works fine also.
Hmm.
I drive a old 2004 Saturn station wagon daily to work. My other car is a 2003 C240 which stays in the garage. Both cars combined can't be more than $5K which is about what my speakers would go for on the used market.
so, no valid comparison here.
I too, am OK with that.

...probably a better measure of true commitment than a comparison to an auto. LOL
Let's just say I've spent more $ on media and stereo equipment than anything
other than food and rent.
Well... maybe cats.
The true commitment just has no comparison!

For about double what I have in audio which is not a lot.
Never really counted what my home system is worth, paid $22K for my 04 Z06 (and the value is holding right now). My stereo is about the same I think.
Picture is from February 21st. The day after I sold my "ex-daily turned into winter car for 2 years 325i". Thankfully it never snowed again here in Kelowna this year.
Actually retail of my system costs more than retail of both of my cars but I was in the audio biz and paid less than half of retail and a couple of pieces I bought used.
