Worse part of drive thru service is when they max out your cup with ice and then add the beverage. I remember a friend telling me they do that on purpose to save money on the drink. A main reason I usually ask (when I remember) for 'minimum ice'.
Follow Ups:
I worked at a McDonald's at 17 and another burger joint while in college. They both tried to get us to maximize the ice. This has been going on forever. Frozen water is cheap.
The cup, gas, top, straw, ice and water (used to dilute the soda syrup) usually costs more than the actual syrup used to make the soda. Factor in labor (a small factor in most of these places but still a factor) and the cost to make the ice and the LEAST costly aspect of a "fountain" soda is... what you order by name and "think" you're paying for. This is NOTHING new though, the industry standard for decades.
