I am (extremely) pleased to report that our son successfully defended his PhD dissertation in Mathematics at the University of Virginia this afternoon.
I am so proud of him I could pop! :-)
Anyone interested in a little light reading can see a presentation on his work at the link below. (nope, I don't understand a word of it)
all the best,

Well he's wearing a Zappa teeshirt and shooting film with a Rolie so he must be OK.

Congratulations to the son. He will enjoy solving some of the algebraic theorems of Ramanujan.
BTW what speaker does he listen to?
All the best

He might be smarter than you... :)
.
One false move and...
I make over $100,000 a year I work, and I have a Masters of Science degree.Not sure who he's insulting. :)
I do like beer though, and as for drugs I take a cholesterol lowering statin medication, some addict ... I am a huge failure I gather.
I was going to get a doctorate degree, but I couldn't stomach the fact that I have to defend myself in any way at the end.
congrats to his son, let's hope he can turn his degree into a good job. At that level you either go into the private sector or stay in academia.

When a blinded tiger takes a sidelong swipe at his tormentors, it's nothing personal.
all the meetings at the workplace, all the newscasts on TV, all the chatter on the radio, everything is about me :)
lol!
I am sorry to take the conversation away from the fact that the OP son got his doctorate, that is a great accomplishment.
like I said, he can go to the private sector and make $500 to $1,200 an hour, or go to academia and make $20 an hour, or maybe get a Federal, State or Local County job and do well for himself because he'll have a pension.
I was joking about the son being smarter than the father, because he could always wind up in the basement like a lot of millenials just smoking pot and playing video games, and live off his fathers estate, but lets say he's better than that :)
Some fathers really do fear *that day*. I think you know what day I'm talking about so there's no need to reiterate...
So that I could do the requirements for my B.Mgmt. Sc. degree.I've forgotten nearly all of it.
I'm retired!

But Timbo, you open a book and one look at a differential equation and the whole thing will come back. It happened to me.
Cheers

Excellent! I have no idea what my kids know either.
