I didn't eat any breakfast today, just a cup of coffee and beer.
I might have an ulcer from servant life. Going to get checked out.
I know it could also be caused by the statins I am taking, pravastatin.
known to cause acid reflux, could be both an ulcer and the statins.
all I know is I chewed two antacid tablets and feel better.
if anyone has any experience with acid reflux let me know.

Hi bullethead
I have Reflux problem for the last 10 years. Caused by Hiatus Hernia. After an Endoscopy exam the Doc put me on Nexiam to be taken before breakfast.
I was asked to stop smoking which I did and also to cut down on Vodka which I didnt. Also to stop indulging in Pork Vindaloo which I cannot do.
I am not supposed to drink fluids before bedtime. Have to have dinner before 8 PM.
I have to sleep on an inclined bed. So I lifted the head of the bed by 6 inches.
In spite of all this recently I kept waking up with severe heartburn with spicy burning acid aspirated to throat and even nose. Now the Doc has asked me take another Nexium before dinner.
I am worried about the condition of my Easophagus. If an ulcer develops it will be a whole new ballgame. A stent should be developed to tighten the hiatus valve.
I take liquid antacids occasionally.
Cheers
Bill
If you take statin drugs, I know that is the cause of mine. I have to stop taking the statins, although I get chest pain if I don't, try to deal, I have to deal as well.
I've been taking Prilosec for the past, 3 years. I am now cutting way back. I don't want to stop drinking wine or give up hot food, or orange juice or.... Magic Pills always have a downside, especially if you're on other meds - like long term kidney damage:
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/common-heartburn-drugs-linked-with-kidney-disease/
There's some good advice here - people here care about you. Get the acid reflux under control and then experiment with what you're eating and drinking and just don't overdo it.
Thank you sir. The pill seems to help, today I think it was the few glasses of Diet Mountain Dew that really caused this eruption along with the low grade instant coffee I usually drink in the mornings.
I will figure it out, I appreciate the regards.
As said below it can be a hell of an alarm clock, I didn't know that these medications were available without a prescription, I tend to be aging very quick over the past decade. I am not even 40 yet my hair is turning white, getting all kinds of bothersome things to deal with.
Not a lot of people understand the mindset has a lot to do with his health, I really believe moving out of NYC will help me. Not many of you guys would understand , sure you can come visit for a week, see tall buildings and fast paced society everything seems good. However living here is a very toxic situation, especially the vampirism mentality of the people you see. Everyone mostly is a tyrant, I think of myself as a kind guy, where I am in a place where nice guys get killed because that is a weakness the vultures see.
Another rant but I had to say it, please and thank you.
:)
Watch out with tums and rolaids, theyre low grade oyster she'll calcium is a kidney stone waiting to happen.Stop eating so much delivery food. Eat more fruits and non starchy veg. Fiber is your friend.Soda sucks too.
And don't forget the most life giving thing; water. Drink a lot of it.

A few mentioned Ranitidine, also helpful musetap mentioned 75 mg dose so I don't screw up my situation with something stronger.
It was $19 here where I live I guess to city mark up for 80 pills. I popped one,
A plus was there was a cute woman at the counter, made my weekend.
I appreciate it, I thought these pills were prescription. Saves me some stress not having to deal with the doc and have to take a day off from work.
Totally does it for me. Approved by my doctor.
I chose to forego coffee, alcohol and acidic foods till undergoing laparoscopic surgery to repair the hernia. All is well now.
You don't want one.
I had one. I cured it by following doctors orders ...nothing citrus based, nothing tomato based, no carbonation, no coffee, no liquor, no fatty foods, no spicy foods ...it was a boring diet.
Two years later my ulcer was cured, as was my acid reflux, which is pretty much a given if you have an ulcer.
Acid reflux is very bad for your throat and teeth and causes sleep apnea ...which can cause death. Not cool.
I now drink in moderation, avoid carbonation and have given up coffee (mornings are so much easier without it) altogether. I haven't had a beer in seven years.
Start taking care of yourself. The repercussions suck.

My ulcer was not caused by bacteria ...it was self inflicted abuse coupled with an anxiety disorder.
Antibiotics would have done nothing in my case.
I wish they would have ...that would have been easy.

That sounds a hell of a lot like what I am going through.
Good to see you got well, it is a nightmare, really,
My anxiety is caused by uncertainty about the future and my job which a psychic said is taking advantage of me.
It really I think is a burden to have a high IQ.
Thanks for the advice. I know coffee doesn't help with anxiety, I've cut it down to one small cup a day over the past few weeks, I have to cut the diet soda, that is killer.
Two? Australian Doctors were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for pursuing this against a lot of skepticism.

Timbo, USA, remember that. We spend the most on healthcare and are all unhealthy at the same time. We are pretty down the rank in health, yet spend the most and will spend even more moving forward as a nation, and get even more sicker.
I don't suffer from American Exceptionalism, when I try to remind others I get glassy eyed stares.
No one even wants Americans in their countries anymore, we are the most hated as well.
Good luck to you, too late for us.
situation and stop blaming everything in sight for it would be my advice.

I've never heard of such a grumpy response.
go play with your cats.
a pretty nice guy and mostly quite compassionate.
Your constant whining, complaining and bitching on a public
forum though while seeming to have learned NOTHING over
the years.. that I find a bit irritating.
Grow up and take some responsibility for your life.
I am now going to play with my cats, spend time with my wife, listen to some music and ENJOY my life.
Until I took some responsibility for my life that would not have happened.

other people gave great healthy information about this topic when they chimed in, except you who has some kind of chip on his shoulder.
that's great you have a nice night.
Don't drink beer for breakfast.
Don't get so drunk you use the term "Ripped to the tits on drink and drugs"
like you're proud of it.
Don't drink coffee on an empty stomach.
Eat well balanced meals.
Stay away from processed foods.
Don't smoke.
Get some fresh air and exercise.
Learn to mediyate.
Learn to take care of yourself in ways that actually matter and will make a difference.
Try Wal-Zan. DON'T use the 150, use the 75.
Overuse will completely screw you up even more than you are, but you seem familiar with that concept.

You could have just recommended Wal-Zan and not have gotten yourself so worked up.
I do what I have to do,
Thanks for the recommendation.
Ditto.
You're welcome.

Thank you again for the recommendation. You have saved me a lot of suffering.
It could be a hell of a lot worse for both you and me, let's be grateful as well.
God bless you.

Even our bread has high fructose corn syrup in it.
All our meats have hormones pumped in them. There is fluoride in our drinking water. Everything is radiated, Timbo we are all in bad shape. Most just have their head up their ass. I will put my tin foil hat on and say yes they are trying to kill us.
Giving up beer and not drinking coffee isn't going to cure the sickness of our culture, we are a GMO experimental playground. Money rules here.

Ok, I am not going to change my lifestyle , start exercising, stop smoking, stop drinking
I stay the way I am, just good enough to serve the system and die knowing I lived the life I wanted to live.
Many chimed in recommending a magic pill, I will see how it goes.

I don't think any doctors here know what the Aussies know.
Key this, hmm. What would cause stomach bacteria, perhaps something we eat.
Crap food that you cannot avoid, in a land where normal food is called organic and price jacked up 2000%, where you get a fine for having a garden,
Be well Tim.
that's the little bugger that that can cause problems. My oldest son had it when he was a kid. Treatment is available.
it's time someone said it.

I had had 3 or 4 in a short period of time. His advice was don't eat acidic foods or wine after 6 or 7 pm, mainly. Which I've pretty much ignored of course. It hasn't been as bad lately tho. He also said Tums etc occasionally, as needed. The idea is to let the food in your guts move further downstream from your stomach.
OTH, in the middle of the night, you won't find a better alarm clock.
Is it a case on NIHere or are your Dr's all that ignorant?

I don't know that I have an ulcer, tho, Tim. Is that what you're talking about? What I was told was that the sphincter (no, not THAT one..) on the top of the stomach gets old when it's as old as the rest of me. So it doesn't slam shut completely water-tight like a duck's butt anymore. So if I go horizontal too soon after eating acidic food, and then my stomach adds some more acid, and that nasty stuff leaks up the wrong direction, etc.... no?
stay vertical as long as possible after eating and while digesting.
Some meals are... easier... than others.
I imagine that no matter how old you are, eating a meal then hitting
horizontal is just NOT a good idear.
Aqua is always good too, helps balance out pH.

Musetap, you're wasting your time. BH is either one f'd up dude (of his own doing), or, this is all part of his research for his doctoral thesis on the psychology of Internet forum behavior.:)

I mentioned to my doc before, these guys don't really care, he said to take Prilosec. He understood the connection between the statins. As it started when I started the statins.
These guys are pill pushers, there seems to be a pill for everything.
Next time I will just swallow a bouquet of pills and not post about my problems or try to find answers, that's the normal way of dealing with this it seems.
I'm 63 and had never had a problem with indigestion until six weeks ago. No "heartburn" or acid reflux; just continuous burping and a sour stomach after eating or drinking coffee. (I should note that for the past 25 years I've started each day with three cups of strong black coffee and 5 ounces of orange juice, oftentimes on an empty stomach.)
After living with the problem for two weeks I embarked on a 14 day regimen of OTC 20mg Prilosec. (One tablet each morning.) While on the medication my symptoms disappeared but the day I went off the Prilosec they returned. At that point I quit coffee and citrus cold turkey. Two days later I was nearly symptom free. Five days later I was experiencing zero burping but still experiencing a bit of a sour stomach after eating greasy foods or drinking alcohol.
So last week I saw my doctor. He diagnosed me as having "gastritis" and prescribed a 90 day regimen of 40mg Prilosec. Upon reading the accompanying literature I was struck by this: "Prolonged use of this drug may cause atrophic gastritis." :(
I've been drinking more than that for longer and have minimal stomach problems
(more due to stress than diet and I mostly lead a pretty stress free life).
Following coffee with an OJ chaser just compounds the problem.
I take maybe two weeks off per year from coffee and switch to black tea
craving the coffee I dearly love the entire time.
It's all checks and balances.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
I have had numerous bouts . ( usually after drinking a lot )
Some very scary .
Now I take a Ranitidine every night ( along with my other meds )
as a preventative ..............
I think I'd rather suffer the indigestion.
Ranitidine: **Less serious** side effects may include:
headache (may be severe);
drowsiness, dizziness;
sleep problems (insomnia);
decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm; or.
swollen or tender breasts (in men);
nausea, vomiting, stomach pain; or.
diarrhea or constipation.
> I think I'd rather suffer the indigestion.I would venture to say you haven't had acid reflux.
It is far beyond "indigestion"
It is starting to drown on your own bile.
At times almost passing out from lack of oxygen.
(while trying to regain breathing)

are pretty generic and true for virtually all histamine h2 receptor antagonist, and also too many other types to list, medications but most people do not experience them. Try the med for yourself once and if it works use it only when you need to.If you do find yourself using it daily drop in and see your PCP for a checkup and true diagnosis.
...exactly.
That's why you can buy it over the counter.
Rantidine 150 mg ( AKA Zantac ) is great for short term acid stomach upset from whatever cause but usually diet related.150 mg once for the symptoms of stomach acid is usually enough for me when I over indulge in homemade organic hot sauce now that my stomach is 67 years old.
...I take one at night also - ranitidine, generic Zantac, 150mg, acid reducer.
Take one at bedtime or when you feel the burn.
Alcohol, tomato sauce, spicy foods and chocolate can be triggers.
Sleeping propped up on a wedge cushion also helps.
