The vents might be old news though: my neighbor got burglarized and all his vents were all yanked.

One thing I do is with those really strong magnetic clips. I clip important things that I want to be able to access quickly with one, then find a dark and not visible place on the basement ductwork to stick it. These would be just as difficult to find in daylight with a flashlight even, you have to know where they are. Easy and cheap, just my style...

There's a book about that, called "A Fool and His Money". It's the story of a medieval French merchant who squirreled away some gold coins, forgot where he'd put them, and then had to litigate ownership when the stash was found by others. It's not a perfect book, but it's an illuminating look at life in a medieval European town.
