Today's Chronicle has this feature of things I found very interesting, including:
Who owns this eyesore, the Sutro Tower? It's been on that hilltop forever.
Follow Ups:
If you had problems opening it, try finding it on line. There really are some interesting things in it. It's not about the Sutro antenna. The word "eyesore" is quoted from the photo description. It's a fun article; not a rant.
I find local individual and corporate property lack of maintenance to be much more of an eyesore than the tower.
People easily get caught up with some "issue" or "cause". In the S.F. area, they really need to focus on their own neighborhoods, 'cause, frankly, they're a mess. And the traffic - seriously - do you really want the world to follow your abysmal example? An hour to go over a bridge? Are you kidding me?!
I love the San Fran bay area for it's cultures and vibrant, homey ambiance, but, really, the traffic issues suck big time. This is a gross and ongoing failure of elected government management.
browser won't support the images, can't take the "test".
Sutro IS an eyesore, I remember the pre Sutro Tower skyline (barely) as being so
... natural... (even though Twins Peaks, for example, isn't natural).
ST IS considered a cultural icon of sorts though by younger generations; it's
portrayed in many artistic images as... aesthetically pleasing ... as possible.
I'll never see it removed before I die, but I would love to.
Who owns it? Big money. They own most everything in this beautiful, incredible whore of a city.

Where would you put the Tower?
Or maybe get rid of over-the air TV, and make Everyone Pay .
On top of Mt. Diablo.
There is no free TV; all that crap about free airwaves is just that.
We all pay one way or another and that 40+ year old eyesore is proof.

I think the Peoples Republic of SF should make TV a RIGHT and FREE.
Turn the tower into scrap / souvenirs.
Too much is never enough
small money.

Oh. I thought you were talking about the foreground 😜
Free.ranger, Sutro tower was constructed in the mid-70s, ostensibly to provide better over-the-air F.M.-n-television signal reception to outlying areas. Had a bud who lived in Brisbane, and the hills blocked out Sutro's signals. However, he got great reception of Sactown's signals from Walnut Grove tower (which is why Sactown always got blacked out when Niner or Raider games didn't sell out; Sactown was beyond 75 mile radius, but not their main television transmission tower). Sutro did provide better signals into Sactown if you had an outdoor antenna, until KCRA & KTXL built their own transmission towers in the mid 80s, which attenuated Sutro signals with increased rfi. BTW, Walnut Grove's tower was considered California's tallest structure, until KCRA's tower surpassed it. 73s para Sactown.
It's the Broadcast Tower for TV and maybe radio.
When it's foggy, from Oakland it looks like the Mast of a giant Orange Pirate Ship.
