First, ANY CAR with 'artifical' sound is excluded from my garage. If I want a video game I have my Nintendo or PS3.
Second, according to the government CPI calculator, 3000$ in 1970 Dollars is just a tick over 18000$ TODAY. THAT'S the car I want from BMW. An All-New 2002. No bells. Few Whistles and NO electronic traction / backup aids. I'll give 'em an extra 1/3 for 'tech improvements' and that means the 8 speed ZF and sound proofing to a modern standard. Fit and Finish doesn't cost a PENNY Extra as witnessed by my wifes Mazda6 in that white pearl color.
That's 24 large for those keeping score. THAT'S the target.
Even that wonderful 2-series is Too Expensive for what it is. Put BMW or PORSCHE on a car and those guys go nuts.
Sounds like a wonderful motor, though. My S-2000 had the same 240hp and 2.0 displacement but was about 100ft/lb short of the mark. I think that additional thrust is what gets this overweight beast (3300? too much) to 60 so quickly.
I'm glad a car mag FINALLY tested something other than the Biggest / Baddest / most powerful model of soemthing.
Too much is never enough

Yea, like we all need to go 0 to 60 in under 5 sec.
5.2 does me just fine....but the oversteer is the good part.
I'm perfectly content with anything under 8.0 to 60. What's the flipppi'n RUSH?
Too much is never enough
but I GET a rush in the twisties!!
I've always valued handling above sheer speed and acceleration.
Even my '73 Super Beetle, once set up, was a lot of fun. I had wheels off the than current 914 since MOST of those guys bought alloys. The steel wheels were like 5$ each at the Porsch dealer. They had a ROOM FULL.
Too much is never enough
