While you guys are drooling / lusting after megabuck cars, my sights are somewhat lower and more realistic. A driver for me, if I had the coin.
And at about all I'd want to spend on one, a reasonable entry.
OH! You can find 'em for MORE, especially the Tii model, but why? This when a new model in about 1970, as an upgrade from the 1600 was about as much fun as you could have on 4 wheels.
And, only about 3000$ than. I couldn't for the life of my talk my dad into one!
The first 320s were a big letdown for me, but later 'recovered'.

Ya know, I'm at that point where it'd be very cool to have that car.
Hopefully, my paint-faded '99 Nissan Maxima will be worth more than zero someday.
:)
I can't remember the EXACT year, but I leased the wife a Max. The first or second year of the 3.0 V-6 twin cam. (VQ) Nice engine and quick, but mediocre economy.
Too much is never enough
Which way should one go?
First, ANY CAR with 'artifical' sound is excluded from my garage. If I want a video game I have my Nintendo or PS3.
Second, according to the government CPI calculator, 3000$ in 1970 Dollars is just a tick over 18000$ TODAY. THAT'S the car I want from BMW. An All-New 2002. No bells. Few Whistles and NO electronic traction / backup aids. I'll give 'em an extra 1/3 for 'tech improvements' and that means the 8 speed ZF and sound proofing to a modern standard. Fit and Finish doesn't cost a PENNY Extra as witnessed by my wifes Mazda6 in that white pearl color.
That's 24 large for those keeping score. THAT'S the target.
Even that wonderful 2-series is Too Expensive for what it is. Put BMW or PORSCHE on a car and those guys go nuts.
Sounds like a wonderful motor, though. My S-2000 had the same 240hp and 2.0 displacement but was about 100ft/lb short of the mark. I think that additional thrust is what gets this overweight beast (3300? too much) to 60 so quickly.
I'm glad a car mag FINALLY tested something other than the Biggest / Baddest / most powerful model of soemthing.
Too much is never enough
Yea, like we all need to go 0 to 60 in under 5 sec.
5.2 does me just fine....but the oversteer is the good part.
I'm perfectly content with anything under 8.0 to 60. What's the flipppi'n RUSH?
Too much is never enough
but I GET a rush in the twisties!!
I've always valued handling above sheer speed and acceleration.
Even my '73 Super Beetle, once set up, was a lot of fun. I had wheels off the than current 914 since MOST of those guys bought alloys. The steel wheels were like 5$ each at the Porsch dealer. They had a ROOM FULL.
Too much is never enough
...in 1976 my roommate sold his older Mercedes 190SL convertible and bought one of these new.
My first experience in a BMW - I've owned them for the past 15 years.
All my friends drove Porsches...
IRS, 2 litre donk, 5-speed box, mags. and with the 1.8/2l donks you could have A/C.
Very popular for rally sports.
Nice car.

The Datsun 510, as it was sold in the States, was really just a perfected Ford Cortina. And I suspect within inches dimensionally. Certainly filled the same automotive niche.
More interesting from around the same time was the 1600 and later 2000 'sports' cars. I think the 2000 was called the 'Fair Lady' which was the name given to the original 240z. At least in Japan.
The 2000 has, I guess, gotten somewhat collectible. Decent reliability, good electrics and a good urban cruiser. I doubt I could stand the 300 miles each way to Vegas, though.
I know ZIP about BMW Minutia. Woudn't know from heads but do remember some tid-bits. The 5 speed fit, but I don't know from what car it came? The Alpina?
I still see one on the road periodically. Must be a couple still in garages around here taken out for weekend exercise.

They had stiffer and better damped suspension than the US builds. It was quick, even in basic form, base Cortinas had a 1200 and weighed more. It had an OHC engine, a 1.6 being the smallest sold here. All but the Lotus Cortina's had OHV engines.
It had IRS, and the Cortina never did. It handled and stopped well. This was a real achievement on Australian roads, which can be very lumpy even the sealed ones, and there was quite a bit of gravel and worse back then.
IMO a quick-ish good handling sedan is a much better buy, than an open sports car, even for a bachelor. There's that back seat and your lady doesn't get cold.
They pretty much replaced Cortinas in rallying down here.
Austrlia's experience with cars is different to yours. Very few smooth wide roads even in urban areas, until a lot later.

One bit of idiocy that somehow stuck is about suspension.
Front struts are generally McPherson while basically the same thing in the rear was known as the Chapman strut. The last? I suspect after Colin Chapman who is legend.

Spent three summers working on BMW'er, in HS. Great mechanic that I learned from. Bought my first old 1600 and later, the Ti from his contacts.
Auto-crossed that Ti (Gymkhana). The 5-speed option was available from Alpina, for the 2002. The Tii & Turbo came with a 5-speed option, from BMW.
For even more minutia, my 1969 1600 had the older Porsche style synchromesh gears. The 1972 2002Ti had the later Borg-Warner type. Rebuilt quite a few of each. Borg-Warner synchros had a much better feel.
Good car. But, a few issues with this year (and later models).
1.) E21 (version 1) head. Hemi-spherical, but not the peppy mid-range performance of the earlier 121 head.
2.) Big square, heavy bumpers -- coupled with softer suspension --- kinda made for a "squishier" ride.
3.) Bigger EGR valve really messed with idle setting.
The best year, IMHO... for the newer E21 head, was mid-1973.
I liked my 121 1972 Ti. Not the top end of the E21 Tii, but the midrange grunt was better. More responsive.
Tii, I think it was a 72. Plain Jane white, blk leather, when like a bat outa hell.
It was a fun car, at the time I had a VW Super Beatle...both went to Hawaii with us and eventually we sold both for more than we had paid new.
She then got a Volvo wagon (being a tad pregnant) and I got a F100 Side step w/351 Cleveland.
